Rebuilding Brooklyn News, 12 Julia Burns shows us all about it.
Above the city moves fast, but below something slower is taking root. When
you think about East New York, you don't equate that with gardens at success
community garden on Williams Avenue. Things are growing that you might not
expect collard greens, pumpkins, watermelon for people here. Gardening
is more than just a hobby. It's a connection to their roots. Oh, I'm from
Africa. So I as a teenager, I've learned how a real tomato tastes like.
And so this is just an ongoing education for me. I have been gardening and
eating from mother asked for the longest. I'm 65 now, so it's kind of
like part of who I am. Brooklynites can come to grow food of their own. But
here there's a big emphasis on community giving back to the people in
the area. Not everybody can afford to eat seasonal food. I mean, when you
have to buy these things in the store, it's totally different in terms of
taste, affordability, sharing between people and poultry. You might think you
have to leave New York City to find the vineyard. Turns out you just have to
know where to look. But gardeners say the sweetest thing growing here isn't
just the produce. One thing about the garden we grow as a family. So it's
like not just coming to do planting in the soul, but we take time in each
other's lives. And that might just be one of the garden's most important
harvests in East New York. Julia Burns News 12.
