Did you know that the Moon is moving away from us? Every year, it moves away from the Earth by about 3.8 centimeters—small, but inexorably, and this has been happening for billions of years.

The reason is the tides. The Moon's gravity raises tidal bulges on Earth (the same high and low tides). But: the Earth rotates on its axis faster than the Moon can orbit it. This rotation drags the near bulge forward a little—it ends up not directly under the Moon, but slightly ahead of it. This shifted hump pulls the Moon forward along its path, transferring energy to it—and, accelerating, it climbs into an ever-more-distant orbit. And Earth itself pays for this: by transferring rotational energy to the Moon, it gradually slows down, and our days become longer.

We explore this with Oleg Kuskov, a specialist in the geochemistry and internal structure of planets, the Moon, and the satellites of the giant planets. How can we even understand what's inside the Moon if we can't get there? Is it true that its "seas" are solidified lava, not water? Why does Earth have a huge iron core, while the Moon has a tiny one? How did the Moon even come to be so close to Earth—and why are scientists still debating its origin?

And why do the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, where there's perpetual cold and no sunlight, hide oceans hundreds of kilometers deep, dozens of times deeper than Earth's, beneath their icy crust? One of Saturn's moons spews water into space, while Titan has methane rivers and lakes. Is there any life there—and are we alone in the Solar System?
