Japan produced one of the most unforgettable performances of the Men's Volleyball Nations League 2026, defeating the reigning world champions Italy in an incredible five-set thriller in Osaka!
Japan ๐ฏ๐ต defeated Italy ๐ฎ๐น 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12) on July 15, 2026, at the Asue Arena Osaka in front of a packed home crowd. It was a dramatic battle between two of the world's strongest volleyball nations, and Japan once again showed why they were one of the biggest stories of VNL 2026.
Japan entered this match undefeated with an incredible 8-0 record, while Italy arrived as the reigning world champions. Despite dropping the first set 24-26, Japan immediately responded with spectacular volleyball, winning the second and third sets 25-19 and 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead.
Italy refused to surrender. The world champions fought back and won the fourth set 25-23, forcing a decisive fifth set.
Everything came down to 15 points.
Japan remained calm under enormous pressure and finally closed out the deciding set 15-12, completing a sensational 3-2 victory and extending their perfect start to 9-0.
๐ฅ RAN TAKAHASHI DELIVERS A MASTERCLASS!
Ran Takahashi was the star of the night, producing a match-high 26 points, including 23 successful attacks, 2 aces and 1 block.
And incredibly, Takahashi scored the MATCH-WINNING POINT to send the home crowd into celebration! ๐ฏ๐ต๐ฅ
Yuji Nishida also delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 20 points with a remarkable 66% attacking success rate.
Japan captain Yuki Ishikawa added 17 points, including 2 aces, continuing his incredible VNL campaign. He also moved within just three kills of reaching 1,000 VNL attack points.

Italy actually dominated the blocking battle with 13 kill blocks compared with only 3 for Japan. However, Japan compensated with incredible serving, defense and attacking efficiency. Japan recorded 6 aces compared with Italy's 2.
The victory was especially meaningful because Italy were the reigning world champions, while Japan were continuing one of the most spectacular undefeated runs of the 2026 VNL.
After this victory, Japan improved to 9-0 and secured their place in the VNL Finals with three preliminary-round matches still remaining.
This wasn't just another volleyball match.
It was a statement.
Japan defeated the reigning world champions. Japan survived five sets. Japan won in front of their home crowd. And Japan continued their unbelievable undefeated run.
