One of the CRAZIEST Matches in Men's Volleyball History !!! Japan entered the semifinals of the Men’s Volleyball Nations League 2026 unbeaten. The USA ended that run in a five-set battle that came down to the final points.

On August 1 in Ningbo Beilun, China, the USA defeated Japan 3–2 (25–19, 23–25, 20–25, 25–19, 15–13) to reach the VNL final. Japan had won all 12 of its preliminary matches and beaten China in the quarterfinals. After falling behind two sets to one against the Americans, it looked ready to take one more step toward the title.

The USA took the opening set 25–19 after overturning Japan’s early 12–9 lead. Yuki Ishikawa led Japan’s response in the second set, a 25–23 win, before Yuji Nishida exploded for 10 points in the third to put Japan ahead 2–1. But Jake Hanes changed the momentum with two consecutive aces in the fourth, helping the USA force a deciding set.

The fifth set delivered one last twist. Kento Miyaura finished a remarkable rally to give Japan a 12–11 lead. The USA answered with three straight points: a Japan service error, an Ethan Champlin ace and a Cooper Robinson kill. At 14–13, Matt Anderson struck the final point to send the Americans to the gold medal match.

Hanes and Anderson shared the match lead with 24 points each. Hanes recorded 20 kills, three aces and a block, while Anderson produced 21 kills, an ace and two blocks. For Japan, Nishida led with 19 points, followed by Ishikawa with 18 and Ran Takahashi with 13.

The USA finished ahead 67–57 in kills, 9–7 in blocks and 7–2 in aces. Japan committed 10 fewer errors, but the Americans found the decisive plays when the semifinal was on the line.

Japan had beaten the USA 15–13 in the deciding set of their preliminary-round meeting. This time, the USA won the fifth set by that exact score, handing Japan its first defeat of VNL 2026 and advancing to face Poland in the final. Japan moved on to the bronze medal match against Slovenia.
