After repairing the damaged canvas and removing decades of discoloured varnish, it’s time for the final stages of the conservation process. In this episode, I fill and retouch the remaining losses, restore the original Regency frame, and bring the painting back to life after years spent sitting in storage.

Along the way, we also uncover the story of Edmund Paley himself and the remarkable legacy of the Paley family as well as uncovering the truth of those unusual canvas stamps.

Bloomfield Art Restoration demonstrates professional techniques for filling canvas damage and retouching lost paint on a 19th-century portrait. The process also includes cleaning and repairing the original decorative frame, while research into historical stamps on the back of the canvas helps uncover the provenance and identity of the artist and the sitter.
