First Day in HONG KONG! Asia's Most Overwhelming City (food, coffee, attractions, where to stay)

So excited to get our kind of first impressions of Hong Kong in 2026. A mall right on the top of a mountain. It's beautiful. It's like, honestly, it feels like you're in the middle of a rainforest. Check this view out behind me. So beautiful. So worth the walk. Good morning from Hong Kong. We are so excited to be spending the next few days in this incredible city. We landed late last night. It wasn't meant to be late but we ended up having a two hour delay on our flight from Manila. But anyway, we are here now. We are so excited. We've got some really fun plans today including food, tourist sites, hopefully not so touristy sites as well. We are on the 24th floor here. It's crazily high up. We've got a bit of a sea of clouds over the skyline here which actually looks very dramatic and moody. I like it. We are staying at Aki, or A-K-I. I assume it's Aki. Aki Hotel. And it's like a Japanese style room and it's amazing. And we're gonna show you around properly later, give you a full room tour. We're heading down to breakfast now. Just quickly, last night's dinner. I have to just tell you this quick story. We ordered from a noodle shop and they were like flat. You know the noodles that are like hand chopped? Incredible. Like hand pulled noodles. They were absolutely incredible. The most delicious chewy texture. I ordered mine with a side of this like special chilli sauce. Being me, I like for some reason can't do things by half. So I just go, yeah let's do it all. So I poured the entire pot in. But I tell you, this was the spiciest meal I've had in my life. My lips like doubled in size. I was sweating from everywhere. It was absolutely delicious and very satisfying and I did still eat it all. But that was a spicy, spicy meal to start our time in Hong Kong. But delicious food anyway. If you are new around here, welcome to the channel. We are Lucy, out there's George, Koda and Remi. We've got two little boys, a 10 month old and a 4 year old. One's nearly 1, one's just turned 4. We are travelling around as a family of 4. And hopefully if you're watching this as a family as well, showing you how easy it is. I mean it comes with its challenges but the pros completely outweigh the cons. But anyway, head down to breakfast now and start day 1 in Hong Kong. So good to be waking up in Hong Kong this morning. We got a late flight, I think Lucy mentioned. We had a delay. We ordered some food to the room last night and it was just amazing. Thank you so much. Oh thank you so much, thank you. We didn't know obviously the food places around but found somewhere, Food Panda. Very very easy to do, Apple Pay. Got some food delivered to the hotel. We had these delicious noodles as Lucy mentioned. But this morning we've gone for omelettes all round. Aki Hotel, really nice breakfast place here. And they serve it to your table so that's cool. Before we head out for the day, fuel up and then go and see what's changed in Hong Kong. It's been so so long for us. So excited to get our kind of first impressions of Hong Kong in 2026. Okay, breakfast nearly finished. I've just got a classic milk tea they've got on the side here. And I've asked for a glass with ice and I thought I'd try it with you because the little signs is a staple here. Smells good. I've never had milk tea from a can before. Okay, just about to head out. But in the hotel they've got this thing called the Zen Garden. Look how nice this is. It's like a little pocket of paradise within the city. There's huge skyscrapers up here. And then this like cool rock art display thing. Very nice. Just stepping out into Hong Kong properly for the first time this morning. Very nice. It's not too hot. I can feel like humidity, it feels quite humid. But we're not too hot. We're in the longer trousers today. And we're going to grab some coffee before heading out into the city. And exploring and doing all the things we want to do. And seeing all the things we want to see. But just quickly at our hotel here. I've just noticed they have an umbrella dryer. Is Hong Kong living in the future? Because I have never ever seen an umbrella dryer outside the front of a building before. Maybe that's common here. If you come here a lot or if you travel here, if you live here. Let us know if that's common. But I have never ever seen that. That way for coffee. Let's go. So we are staying in Wan Chai. Which is an area. I'll put a little map on the screen here just from Google Maps. That is where we're staying. And we found a place called N1 Coffee. Which looks like we have just arrived. Tiny. Okay, cool. It's a tiny little coffee space. Well rated on Google. So we're going to grab some coffee first. Thank you so much. Thank you. Really, really nice little coffee shop here. Very cool little space. Got my flat white. Let's try it. Oh, that's very, very good coffee. Delicious. Good to know that's so close to the hotel. Apple Pay worked great in there. I remember traveling years ago. Is that us already? I've booked an Uber. Let's see. Sorry, interrupting my own sentence here. We are, no, we are a white Toyota 108. It is coming in four minutes. That's pretty good. For a big city, four minutes. So basically, yeah, everything worked well in there. Nice. I remember years ago we were having to get cash out, go find ATMs and stuff like that. Just seems like you don't have to do that anymore. Even in the Philippines where we just were, Apple Pay is working all around. So that's so, so handy. And also credit card companies, going off topic again. Banks and stuff, they seem to not charge you as much these days. We can use all our UK cards and it's fine. There's no huge charges anymore. We've booked an Uber, is what I was saying. And we are heading up, or we're going to try and head up to The Peak, which you may have heard of. It's a very touristy thing to do here in Hong Kong. The first thing you Google, what to do in Hong Kong, it comes up. But we're doing it with a slight twist. We'll explain when we get to the top. So instead of doing it the more touristy way, like getting the tram up, and then going into the observation deck, we have done some Googling and found there's a slightly different way to do it. So by doing that, you save all the queues at the tram. The tram is good. We've done it before. It's really good. If you're doing it for the first time, you might want to do that. But if you want to save some queues, save some money. Just book an Uber. It costs about £10. It was about HK$12 from Wan Chai, where we were. And yeah, we're right up the top already. And we don't have to now go into The Peak. Oh, this is a mall, by the way. We had no idea it was a mall. So we can maybe explore around here a little bit afterwards. We don't have to go into the viewing area now. Because you can pay to go in. We've also done that. It's very cool, but it's busy. It's touristy. What you can do, you can head to a place called Lugard Road. Not sure if I'm pronouncing that correctly at all. And you can do The Peak Circle Walk, which takes around one hour. I'm not sure we're going to do the whole thing. The views, apparently, and we're going to find out together because we're not sure we haven't done it before. The views are apparently just as good, if not better, than what you get when you pay to go into the actual viewing area. Okay, this is so cool. They've got a whole shopping mall up here. I actually had no idea this was up here. Peak Galleria. Wow. I thought it was just the viewing deck that we went to last time. Lucy and I came up here in 2019, seven years ago, before we had kids. And we did the cable car, and we went to the top. It was a cloudy day, and it's kind of a cloudy day today again as well. We're hoping we're going to get a nice view. But we definitely didn't come here. I don't know how new this is. That is amazing. That's so, so cool. A mall right on the top of a mountain, basically. The last time we saw something like that was in Baguio, in the Philippines. And up there they've got whole towns, communities, shopping malls, everything, all built into the mountains. Kind of reminded me of that kind of vibe a little bit, with a cooler breeze as well. Okay, we're at the start of the walk now, just behind us. It's really unusual weather. It feels like we're in the depths of a rainforest. It's so humid. I'm getting really hot, but it's that weird grey sky, but really bright sunlight squinting. I'm really warm, but it's not blue skies or sunny. It's bizarre. And I also thought sort of coming up a bit higher might make it cooler. It's actually probably hotter than it felt at the bottom. But there is a bit of a cool breeze, so I'll take that. But anyway, we've got a bit of a walk now. I think we're maybe 10 minutes or so this way. Apparently it just looks like a very normal road for a while. There's lots of trees, and then it opens up to hopefully something special. But equally, it's a cloudy day today, so we're setting some expectations and not expecting too much, and we'll see what we get. If this walk was like an activity in itself, I mean, look behind me. There's a waterfall. There's amazing mountains. It's like a stream running down here. There's amazing tree roots coming out the side of rocks. It's really nice. Even if this was the activity, I'd be more than happy because it's beautiful. It honestly feels like you're in the middle of a rainforest. You've got butterflies flying around. They've got some of these tree roots that are just sort of coming down these rocks. I love stuff like this. It's really cool. But still no crazy views. Still walking. OK, slight change of direction. You can go all the way around, but I think it's over an hour's walk, and the pace we were going at with the kids probably was going to be more like two hours. And we have got other plans today. We have come back to the main area and actually gone anti-clockwise, which was our original plan. We accidentally went the wrong way, but we did end up seeing a cool ant trail and stuff and some weird cricket bug thing. But yeah, we have now come the other direction, and the view is almost straight away. It's amazing. So I'm going to try and show you some of it. It's kind of through the trees. When we came a few years ago and did the normal peak where you pay, and it's sort of like a view straight out onto everything, it's amazing, obviously. But it being framed by these tropical jungle trees almost makes it look more amazing. Yeah, just waiting for it to open up a little bit more. But look at some of these plants. So cool. OK, about ten minutes into the walk, it started to really open up behind. Look at that view. So nice. But my phone says it's still around five minutes to the official lookout of Lugard Road. Really excited to see it get even better. Check this view out behind. This is unreal. George has managed to carry Koda all the way up the hill, and Remy's asleep in a buggy. So I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit sweaty after that. But that is amazing. It kind of feels surreal that the skyscrapers are so far below us. Like, they're huge skyscrapers. Imagine being underneath a skyscraper and looking up and being like, wow, that's a huge skyscraper. We are so much higher than them looking down on them. There's just like clusters of these. Hong Kong's mad. It's these so many skyscrapers so close to each other in such a condensed space next to the Victoria Harbour, this huge body of water between the island and mainland. It's like, it's surreal. And then we've got this like lush jungle in front of it. So beautiful. So worth the walk. Okay, so we are back around. That was an amazing walk. Carried Koda most of that way, and we are on six and a half thousand steps. So not bad for a morning. If you look behind me here, I'm going to have to actually flip the camera around to show you. This up here is the actual viewing deck where you have to pay to get in. It is a little bit higher, but you're getting basically the same view. So yeah, I've actually really this time enjoyed doing this more calm walk on this path. My apple's wet now. Your apple's wet? That's weird. It's really humid, isn't it? Koda's enjoying an apple, and I think we're going to get... My apple's wet now. I think we're going to get a nice cold drink at the end of this walk. My apple's wet now. It is. Yeah, weird. I can feel it on my shoulder. Nice. And just like that, back into civilization. Like nothing ever happened. That was a lot of fun. I definitely recommend doing that. And there is an Arabica here. My favorite coffee shop in the world potentially. Sitting here having our coffee after the walk. And I wanted to say cooling down, but it's quite near the door. It's still very humid. Like it's not even the heat. It's not that hot. It's the humidity. You just get soaked. Like our backs are just wet. But very, very nice. Nice area to be in. It's touristy, but it's not overwhelming. It's not too busy. It's definitely... I would say it's definitely way more tourists than locals. I guess locals don't bother coming up here. Maybe they do. It seems like there are people on kind of jogs and runs and walks. A lot of people in like sports gear and headphones in. What a place if you do live here and you live locally. And you can come up here. It's a Monday. Is it a Monday? It's a Monday, I think. So maybe it's busier on the weekends. But I have to say, usually we've been traveling for many, many years. And like the first time we went around places, of course, we do all the tourist things. But as we go on, we try and tend to maybe avoid the most touristy things. This is definitely the most touristy thing you could probably do. In Hong Kong. But here on a weekday, it's not overwhelming at all. It's actually nice. It's a nice atmosphere. People are calm. People are just enjoying themselves. And this whole mall here is amazing. We're not going to spend too much time here. I don't know what kind of stores are here. There's like a hat store, obviously coffee shops, restaurants. But our plan is to get an Uber down to Central and look around that area. That's where we really want to be. Wanted to come up here for the view. But we want to be downtown looking around Central. And yeah, just soaking up the 2026 Hong Kong. Because it's such a cool city. It's so... You need help? I want to very quickly show you something that arrived at the house recently. And I think it is the coolest thing we've ever had at home. This is the Yisoul G1M Plus bike. This is a game changer. So what we have here is a spinning bike with proper pedals that you can clip your feet in. An adjustable saddle for different ride heights. It has a screen where you can mirror your phone. You just plug it in with the cable. So all I have to do is come over here. There's a wire that comes with it. It is super easy to install, by the way. I built all this myself. Very, very easy. I've just been lagging behind Lucy taking some videos and pictures. It is so cool here. There's another Arabica. It is so impressive. I don't remember it like this. Did we come to this area? It feels a little bit more commercialized. It's got almost like a Tokyo feeling. Maybe this is kind of like where the higher-end brands are. It's in some designer shops and stuff. I remember an area before that felt more Hong Kong-y, if that makes sense. This feels a little bit more kind of... I don't know what it feels like. It feels very nice and very high-end. Very top-level luxury. We're coming down a little side street now. Looking for our lunch spot that I've researched to come to. It's tucked away among these little stalls. Chinese restaurant. Head of Chinese. We've ordered some food for lunch. It's starting to come out. The guys are tucking in. We've gone for these steamed buns with beef. With Wagyu beef. It's also quite a nice place. I've taken my hat off. I wasn't planning on not wearing a hat today. Ignore the hair. Yes, that's mine, matey. Is it spicy? Not spicy. Okay, thank you. Can I try it? Thank you. I'm going to try a little bit of this. Looks good. Delicious. So good. The dumplings have arrived. How authentic. He's got a dumpling t-shirt. He says it looks like onions. He's convinced that they're not dumplings, they're onions. He's even telling me that. I didn't get it on camera, but he just said, the onions have arrived. So these are dumplings. Yeah, how good does that look? Careful, very hot. Thank you very much. Wow, very nice. Okay, this is the barbecue pork. It looks really good. Nicely presented as well. The prices are like 200 odd dollars per dish. It's like 20 pounds. Fairly expensive for one dish. Very expensive. It is expensive compared to other Asian countries, but in England it might be like 15 pounds for this. It's expensive, but it's Hong Kong. You wouldn't expect it to be cheap, and it is a nice restaurant. So good. Wait your turn. They've given us a high chair for Remy, but it's like one that you strap onto a chair and he keeps falling out of it, so we're having to eat one at a time basically. It's got like a sweet and sticky glaze on the edge. Really delicious. Koda, you're gonna like this actually. And now, a favourite with the kids it seems. Both of them are really enjoying this. We've got, well he said to me it's a vegetarian noodle, but there's definitely pieces of chicken in this, which luckily for us, we're not vegetarian, so that comes as a pleasant surprise, but it's basically like noodles with egg, and vegetables, and chicken. So good. Simple, but it's got that kind of slightly chow mein taste like in England. Really delicious. So fresh. Super authentic. So looking at this restaurant, we're the only like foreigners it seems. Hopefully we've come to like a good spot, and we're not in like a tourist trap, and we've come to like a local spot I think, which we try and do when we travel. You never know really, you just sort of try your best, but honestly the things that George is finding to balance this camera on are just ridiculous. Anyway, we're currently balancing some xiao long bao while I eat some pork dumplings. Wow. Mopping up the soup from my chin, it just squirted over at me. Avoided the clothes. Delicious. So good. But again, like simple, but it just tastes so authentic. I'm trying to show you the insides without, you see there. So delicious. Lunch finished, that was really good. It was 78 Hong Kong dollars, no it wasn't, that would be a bargain, 780 Hong Kong dollars, and I think a pretty good price for a nice restaurant, really enjoyed the food. And now we are heading towards the like bay area, towards a hot observation wheel. We're not going to go on it, but we've got a plan of possibly taking the ferry over to the mainland as a little thing to do, because I think you get really cool views from there, or walking all the way along the like water side, the waterfront. So we're going to get down there, see what we fancy doing. My hair's gone all like humid, I've never had this. The humidity here is insane, it's so intense. But I just asked for some directions, because Google Maps looked like there was those stairs up and down to get down there, but they've got this walkway that just goes above all the roads for pedestrians, it's so handy. And we're going to get all the way down to the waterfront on this one walkway. Come down now to the waterfront kind of area, where you can travel right over to the other side by ferry, look at that view, really, really nice, nice to be by the water. It's got much hotter, we just noticed the temperature has kind of increased, the breeze has gone, and it's very, very hot and humid. Not to be the British people that talk about the weather, but here we are. So we're just trying to decide if it's worth us taking a ferry over. It would be nice to be on the water, but from the look of that ferry, it's not like an open kind of boat, and I'd way prefer to like be on top and open looking around. So it's almost like a little bit of a river cruise, but I'm thinking it's not set up for that. It is genuinely functional transport by the looks of it, but we'll see. Maybe there'll be some other kind of tour or provider that can send us across the river, and we can actually be on top. We were actually really lucky last time. We have a friend here in Hong Kong who I'm meeting later on as well, Richard. Actually, comment below. I doubt this, maybe, maybe, 2018, 2008, I said 2019 earlier. We were here in 2018, and I met a friend, he knows someone at the Hong Kong Yacht Club, and we actually, Lucy and I, got taken out on a boat across the place where they do the boat race here, which was just so cool, such a good experience. But even if we don't go on the water today, this is a really nice stroll along. Seems like people are out just jogging, walking dogs with the city behind, and I find that Hong Kong really has its own unique identity. It feels very different to the other countries that we've traveled to. We haven't yet been to like mainland China, Shanghai or anything like that. We haven't yet done that. We really want to, it's on our list. And I'd be interesting to see if there are similarities or not. But for us so far, Hong Kong is just a very cool place. It's a kind of mix of modern, clean, luxurious, big city. There's supercars everywhere, way more than I remember last time. Just money and cars are just here, like everywhere you look. But then equally, there's the kind of old school, authentic side with all the lights. We haven't quite seen it yet, but tomorrow, coming up for the next vlog, we're going to go to a slightly different area. An area we remember with all the kind of like neon lights and all the writing and just that kind of, to me, what feels more authentic and not your kind of high street stores and your designer brands and stuff. The real deal, I don't know how you want to say it. It's hard when you travel because your experience of a place can literally be decided whether you turn left down the street or carry on one more street and turn right. Like these places are so varied and so interesting. And that's why it's good to come back to places, to try and explore somewhere a bit different, the places you didn't go to before and try new things. Okay, when in doubt, always ask this lovely lady here. She just helped us at this desk and she basically gave us the rundown. The public transport is literally public transport. It's a ferry, it's all indoor. They are an operator who do like a nighttime, open deck, party vibe kind of boat, which would be fun, but it's like at 8 and 9 p.m. when these guys would be in bed. So that's the reality. Traveling with kids, sometimes we can't do all the things, but wouldn't change it for the world. Little update, we decided against the boat, but we get the view anyway because we've walked all the way down here and further on this kind of walkway, so nice by the way, everyone's just out running, walking, meeting family, meeting friends, I don't know, whatever, whoever they're meeting. And yeah, they have these like big characters things all set up along here as well, which is just fun, like good for kids, keeping Koda entertained. Koda, there's a whole park here full of them. That's so cool. It's like a anime kind of thing. Yeah, look. I don't know how we get in. I don't think you go in. Let's figure it out. Oh, maybe we go in the other side. Koda has found the way. Oh, this is so nice for him. Because sometimes when we travel, like we do, we try and do some stuff for him, like the soft plays and stuff like that. Well, actually, maybe you're not allowed behind these. Why don't we, because I think they've closed that bit. So let's stick to this bit. We're also at the age where he doesn't like listening to us. We're at a tricky age actually right now. Timing with this trip has been a bit difficult, but there we go. That's parenting. It's all good fun. Careful, because that's a sprinkler. Prime example. But let's walk through here. I think we can just walk through here. Yeah, we try and do things for him like quite a lot. Every couple of days, we'll do like a soft play or a park or something. But at the end of the day, we do drag him around doing the things we want to do as well. So it's so nice. Wow, look at you, mate. Look how happy he is up there. Yeah, how is it? Wow. Can you do it? Wow, mate. Yeah, when there's something like this like on the way, just like happens naturally through our day, it's perfect. Puts him in a good mood because we're going to have to ask him to sit at dinner table tonight again for the third time in today. And if he's had something like this for himself to fill his cup, it helps us out as well. A few hours and 14,000 steps later. That's how many we've done today. We're back. We're randomly back. We put 7-Eleven in to try and get coda and ice cream, which he has got. Lucy's looking for some other snacks. We do not have 7-Eleven in the UK. Whenever we're in Hong Kong or Japan or something like that, they just have such cool, unique snacks. We love it. So we always go in and choose a few things. We just realized it's the same street we started the day in at the coffee shop. So I'm going to see what Lucy's picked up. She's in there right now, hopefully getting some delicious little treats. Okay, we got the goods. Lucy got Haagen-Dazs cookie and cream. And I got this. I don't really know what it is. I think it's like a biscuit ice cream thing. Can I try some? Crispy sandwich. We are back in the hotel room now. The best view ever. We landed late last night, and the view was nice at night. And actually, I'll show you the room quickly because it is so nice. This is Aki Hotel. I think we mentioned it earlier. They've kindly... I mean, look around. It's a Japanese themed hotel. So like the wardrobe is behind these things. Let me show you the bathroom. You get a Japanese toilet. Oh, on cue. Random applause for the toilet. On cue. Knew it's part in the vlog. Read the script. Shower with... Oh, this one's twisty. Okay, the other room is buttons. It's really cool. You just press a button. Little bath here that the boys can use. Just really, really high end everywhere. Nice lounge area. It's actually a really cool bath. It kind of looks like a hot tub. It's really deep. I guess this is like Japanese design. It's kind of square but like super deep and just so nice. These tiles. Everything here is just kind of high end. Yeah, nice big bed. Oh, the bed is lovely. It's all like electric. The blinds and the lights. It's all just like seamless. I'd love my house to be like this one. Oh, yeah. It's just so like clean and aesthetic. And then there's the view. So when I turn the camera around, wow, it's so nice. Did you film the view? Okay, I'm just gonna show it again because it is so cool. We couldn't quite believe how close together these buildings are. It's just so many buildings all so close together and so high up. And we even get a little peek at the mountains as well. Oh, peek. Play on words, how funny. And what's cool, because we're a family of four, we need a little bit more space. Koda has his own bed. We go through the conjoining door and we have a second bedroom here. I don't know why we're just having these buttons for the waterfall shower. Get the camera out of the way before it gets wet. Something about that, just so satisfying. Nice. Okay, back to the hotel. Fresh and dark, quick shower. Koda and Mummy had a nice big bath and had some time playing, which was lovely. And we've now come down to the hotel restaurant for dinner at Tangram. That's the name there. And they've got this incredible set menu. So it's four courses. We've got like octopus and beef tartare for starts, French onion soup. Then you can choose the main, there's like beef tenderloin, which is actually a beef strip loin tonight. We're looking forward to that. Or sea bass or mushroom risotto. And then for dessert, no, there's, what was the dessert? I can't remember the dessert. I think it said Chef Ricky's pastry or something. Chef Ricky something. And so, yeah, very much. Aw, thank you. What do you say guys? So really looking forward to trying it. And it's quite nice coming back to like a base after a busy day. How many steps do you want? 15 and a half thousand steps. Which old us easy, but knowing that one of us did those steps pushing a buggy, the other one did it carrying a child. So either Remy was in the carrier. No, Coda was not holding George. George was holding Coda. I feel like we've really earned this like meal just to sit and just enjoy. Watch the life go by on the street behind us. So funny though, Coda just got a plate from underneath the kitchen here because it's like an open kitchen. And Coda grabbed a plate and went, oh, I want to get some of the other food first though. Your fish has arrived, sir. It's Remy's cod. Looks nice, right? Coda's got the kid's macaroni. That's not actually a kid's meal, is it? Yeah, it's a kid's meal. That is a kid's meal. So fancy. You join me much later on in the evening. It's nearly 11 PM. And I've been out, met a friend of mine here who we go back a long time. Great to see him out here. We met him when we first came to Hong Kong in 2018. And he showed us so many things. And yeah, just so good to catch up completely off camera. But yeah, heading back now to the hotel. Got a taxi. Just like enjoying walking around on my own. No offense, Lucy, Remy and Coda. But just to look up, look around, be in my own thoughts in Hong Kong. Like a guy from a small town in the UK. It's very, very cool and quite surreal being here. But we've loved it today. It's been so, so good. We've got another couple of days here to explore. Come back for the next video.
