Cal Guard Tyson Ruffins on Improvement of Bears' Offensive Line

How would you assess how the offensive line did last year? I for sure think there are a lot of places that we could have done a lot better at, but that's the point of offensive line play. You take a little bit of time to completely mesh together and over time I feel like offensive lines become better. It's not an overnight thing. Why do you think the offensive line will be better this year? I think a lot of us have better, we mesh well together better. We have a lot more better dynamics. We've been playing together a little bit. Our interior is coming back, all three of us. Just getting that relationship better and keeping that bond is the main thing for us right now. Is there a statistic that offensive linemen look at? We tend not to look at too many of those except for the basic ones like overall rushing yards and how many sacks you gave up. That's pretty much the main one for us. Rushing was not a real strength of Cal's last year. Why do you think the running game will be better this year? We have a lot more additions in the running back rooms. All of our guys are great. Adam, Carter, Ashton, and returners too like Anthony Lee. All of us, we're excited about our running game. Ultimately, that falls upon the O-line as well. Like I said, going back to playing with each other again, I don't think that's going to be a special thing. My job at best, as a standout running back at Cal about 15 years ago, I said, the offensive line is way more important than the running back as part of the running game. Do you buy that? No, for sure. A great running back can always make anybody look better. The main thing for us right now is just coming together as a unit. I feel like that's what we've been doing this whole summer.
