Shamans & Disappearing Villages of Limi Valley in Humla | Far Western Nepal

We finally made it to the Limi Valley of Humla in Nepal's Far West Karnali, along the northwestern border with the Tibetan Autonomous region of China. Join us as we make the arduous journey to this culturally and geographically diverse land under the shadows of Mt. Kailash. Shamanism is still practiced here, and we somehow had the fortune to witness this dying tradition first hand.

Hidden in Nepal's far northwestern reaches, Humla remains largely disconnected from the rest of the country. Which is also why it has maintained a highly distinct culture even amongst Nepal’s Himalayan regions. For centuries, Humla stood at the crossroads of two great civilizations. These communities, especially in the northern reaches of the district, specifically in Limi Valley are now on the verge of disappearing.
