Did We Finally Solve the DEWALT Socket Problem? - Part 2

A few days ago I posted a problem with this DEWALT mechanics kit and asked all of you for ideas. The biggest issue was that the sockets would fall out whenever the case was opened from one side, making the kit much less practical than it should have been.

After reading through the comments, one suggestion stood out.

Instead of trying to hold every individual socket in place with magnets, I removed the molded insert that was supporting the sockets, sanded the bottom flat, and let the sockets rest directly against a magnetic sheet installed inside the case.

The result?

It’s not perfect, but it solves the original problem surprisingly well. I can now close the case from either direction without the sockets dumping everywhere, and for normal everyday use the kit is dramatically more practical.

Huge thanks to everyone who left suggestions—especially the viewer whose idea inspired this modification. This is exactly why I enjoy involving the community in these little engineering challenges.

Could this be improved even more?

Absolutely.

A custom-sized neodymium sheet or another stronger magnetic solution might make this even better in the future. If you know of one, leave it in the comments because I’d love to test it.

I also plan on bringing more real-world engineering problems like this to the channel whenever I run into them, so if you enjoy solving practical problems, you’re in the right place.

Thanks for watching!
