Could gold be only halfway through its bull market? That's the case market analyst Craig Hemke is making.
Hemke believes gold could eventually reach $8,000 per ounce, with the potential to climb to $16,000 later. He sees that unfolding over the medium to long term, describing it as a process that could take a handful of years before a possible second major move higher.
His outlook is built on several long-term trends. Hemke argues that expanding government debt, continued currency debasement, and negative real interest rates will keep pushing investors toward gold as a store of value. He also points to gold's long-term climb from roughly $1,000 to $2,000, and then to about $4,000, as evidence that major advances have occurred in stages rather than all at once.
Hemke acknowledges that gold has never moved higher in a straight line. He notes that previous bull markets, including the 1970s and 2001–2011, were interrupted by corrections, while long bear markets such as 1980–2001 and 2011–2015 remind investors that gains are never guaranteed. In his view, the recent weakness is more consistent with a period of consolidation than the end of the broader uptrend.
Looking ahead, Hemke expects investors to shift their attention back to falling real interest rates, large government deficits, and the possibility of future Federal Reserve easing. If that happens, he believes gold could regain momentum.
He also expects silver to recover alongside gold as markets refocus on monetary policy and inflation instead of short-term geopolitical events. While silver has historically been more volatile than gold, Hemke notes it has often delivered stronger gains during the later stages of precious metals bull markets.
