Trinidad and Tobago's location — where tectonic plates collide and sediment piles up — creates rare deep-sea environments. This tectonic activity forces hydrocarbons like methane to the surface through seafloor fissures, providing the chemical energy needed to fuel entire ecosystems without sunlight. The region is a hotspot for twilight-zone mesophotic coral and sponge reefs, mud volcanoes, and cold seeps (also known as methane seeps).

The #DeepWonders science team, led by Dr. Diva Amon of SpeSeas, conducted the first systematic scientific exploration, seeing new habitats, ecosystems, and biodiversity. This highlight reel includes footage collected by the ROV and science team and is sure to instill a bit of wonder for the animals inhabiting the deep waters of Trinidad and Tobago and beyond.
