THE ISLAND WHERE SATIVA GROWS BETWEEN A VOLCANO AND THE OCEAN

In this special highlight from Saint Vincent documentary, we venture into the remote northern region of Saint Vincent to explore the slopes of La Soufrière, an active volcano whose major 2021 eruption dramatically transformed the landscape, agriculture, and communities living at its base.

Our journey begins by sea, navigating toward one of the island’s most isolated regions. From the coast, we climb through the jungle to traditional fields growing on fertile volcanic soils, guided by local farmers who open their doors and share agricultural knowledge passed down through generations.

Our mission is to document and preserve ancient Caribbean genetics that survived the eruption. Through field observation, sampling, and phenotype analysis, we search for traces of native landraces and old tropical varieties that are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Along the way, we explore how the unique composition of volcanic soil influences agriculture in the region and meet a community that has returned to these lands following the devastation of the eruption.

At the intersection of science, biodiversity, and traditional knowledge, this expedition offers a unique look into one of the Caribbean’s most extraordinary agricultural landscapes and the importance of preserving its genetic and cultural heritage for future generations.
