AI GeneratedPresident Trump has paused planned large-scale strikes against Iran, claiming the regime is privately seeking negotiations despite public denials. While the President views this as a final opportunity for Iran to agree to denuclearization and ensure the openness of the strait, tensions remain high and no formal deal has been reached.
Trump has claimed the US is in talks with Iran as the regime denies there's any negotiations
to end the conflict.
Live to Jonathan Kersley in Washington, Jono, the US President warns this is the last chance.
The President hit the pause button on planned strikes he said would have been the biggest
since World War II.
Speaking inside the Oval Office today, he reiterated his view that this is the last
chance for a deal and for Iran to sign an agreement.
But there is no sign of any deal forthcoming.
Iran has been insisting through state media that there are no negotiations, no talks scheduled,
and that one of the key figures, Foreign Minister Abbas Araci, is not even available until the
end of the week.
Well, the President hit back, first to Truth Social, describing them as unbelievably duplicitous,
insisting Iran doesn't say the same thing publicly, that it says privately, and that
he had been called by Iran, the United Arab Emirates, by Saudi Arabia, by Qatar, to put
a halt to the plans.
That halt he announced yesterday as he made his way back to Washington, D.C. and to the
White House.
This is some of what he had to say about his warning inside the Oval Office.
Iran did not want to be hit.
And they said, we want to talk, we want to talk about the strait, but more importantly,
from my standpoint, we want to talk about the denuclearization of Iran.
This is a last chance for them to sign a good document.
But you heard the President say there he wants to talk about the strait, and yes, he said
inside the Oval Office that that could be open as soon as tomorrow.
He has insisted, though, throughout the entirety of this latest blockade, it is open, aside
from vessels getting into Iranian ports.
Once again, the President saying there will not be any tolls charged for the use of the
strait.
And he wants the idea of the strait being opened first before moving to what he says
is denuclearization, which he says will take much longer.
But the President also had some strong words today for America's oil companies, its petrol
companies, suggesting that they have been gouging customers here in the United States
throughout the entirety of this conflict.
Based on a shortage, they're making too much money, Chevron, too much money, Exxon Mobil,
too much, too much money.
When you look at one company where they made 12 times what they made the year before, they
ought to give some of that back to the public and they better cut the retail price.
But Pete, still no sign broadly of a deal with Iran.
The President, you can tell, is growing increasingly frustrated by this conflict as each day passes.
