August 12, 2026 is the biggest skygazing day of the century. The Perseid meteor shower peaks under a completely moonless sky, the core of the Milky Way stands high in total darkness, and six planets line up across the sky before dawn.
All of it is possible for one reason: the same New Moon that produces the total solar eclipse earlier that day removes every trace of moonlight that night. A New Moon will not fall on August 12 again until 2045.

The Secrets of the Universe explains how a rare alignment of a total solar eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower, a planet parade, and the galactic core provides a unique window for observation. This guide outlines how to best view these celestial events occurring within a single 24-hour period on August 12th, 2026.
