Deep Vibes | Deep Wonders of Trinidad and Tobago

In late June, a team of largely Trinbagonian scientists explored the deep waters of Trinidad and Tobago and the adjacent high seas; Dr. Diva Amon of SpeSeas served as chief scientist. The island nation’s largest ecosystems (93% of their territory!) lie between 30 meters and the deep ocean. Supported by the ship’s dedicated crew, they used ROV Subastian, the state-of-the-art technology on board R/V Falkor (too), and novel technologies to document the biodiversity and reveal the depths to people living in the region.

Their work focused on systematic observation and data collection in order to effectively steward the ecosystems explored, while building capacity for ocean science in the Caribbean by training the next generation of ocean explorers. “This is about everything that is yet to come,” said Dr. Diva Amon. “For Trinidad and Tobago and the entire Caribbean, in how we know, understand, and value this enormous part of our region, in the future.”
