AI GeneratedThe speakers share humorous anecdotes about high-pressure hosting and award show mishaps. One recounts the chaos of hosting the Australian New Year's Eve fireworks show without notes, while the other discusses the Oscars' practice of using orchestras to cut off long speeches and the political tensions surrounding certain winners.
Was it New Year's Eve you hosted in Australia?
Oh my God, I don't believe you know that.
The first thing I hosted, this was back when I would do anything for money,
I was asked to host the Australian New Year's Eve fireworks special.
I was like, fantastic, $3,000 I'm in.
So I went and I hosted it, it's this act, Kylie Minogue singing, blah blah blah, doing all this stuff.
And of course the centrepiece of New Year's Eve is the fireworks show.
And they said, now this is the most difficult, you've got 45 minutes
and you have to commentate the fireworks.
And I was like, I know nothing about fireworks.
And they said, don't worry, there's four pages of notes here,
there's 120,000 tonnes of dynamite, there's five barges, you'll be fine, just go for it.
So finally we go through the show and all of a sudden Kylie puts the detonator,
the fireworks start, and the producer goes, and go.
And I said, and I look over at the guy, and by the way, the entire crew are drunk.
Everyone's drunk.
They're not missing out on the fun.
He's got the notes, and he's lighter.
And he's up in smoke.
45 minutes, and I'm looking at a monitor.
The colours are extraordinary.
I can't believe just the explosiveness.
The worst 45 minutes of my life.
Which, that's why I turned that down.
Lee, do you know at what point in kind of Oscars history,
they introduced, you know, the orchestra doing the playoff thing.
You know, Sandy and the band.
Oh, when the timing, if someone's speech runs too long, they play more.
I'd like to thank my agent, I'd like to thank my mother,
I'd like to thank the real sufferers of dyslexia.
And then it gets loud, and then I'd like to thank the residents of Tallahassee,
and I'd like to thank Mary Beth, who's contributed more to this film
than she'll ever know.
And then the microphone goes down.
Yeah, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Was there a point?
Someone screwed it up for everyone else.
Oh, I'm sure.
I know when they wanted to play people off, too.
Mike Meyer, no, Michael Moore.
Oh, right, yes, right.
The Columbine movie, yeah, because he got a little too political.
But they didn't play him off then.
No, they just beat him up in the wings.
I think Steve Martin actually even said that.
Some teamsters helped him into the trunk of his car.
