Archaeologists Scanned A Sealed Egyptian Mummy — And What They Found Is Shocking

Who was the unnamed royal woman found in KV35, and why does her body still raise questions more than a century later?

Inside the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is a mummy known by a laboratory label: KV35YL, or “The Younger Lady.” She was discovered in 1898 in tomb KV35 in the Valley of the Kings, unwrapped, unidentified, and placed among other royal cache mummies hidden there in antiquity.

In 2010, DNA and CT research published in JAMA identified her as the mother of Tutankhamun and the daughter of Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye. That solved part of the mystery. Her bloodline was royal. Her name was still unknown. And the CT work placed her inside one of the strangest families in Egyptian history: the Amarna royal line.
