Carl M. Ziehrer - Guttenberg March, Op. 137 (c. 1869)

Carl Michael Ziehrer (more rarely spelled Karl Michael Ziehrer) (2 May 1843 – 14 November 1922) was an Austrian composer. In his lifetime, he was one of the fiercest rivals of the Strauss family; most notably Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss.

Ziehrer’s works often bore the names of the regiments or individuals they honored, so this March was composed to celebrate or honor the Guttenberg regiment.

This naming convention was common in 19th-century military band music: marches were often named after the regiment, a commander, or a significant event, serving both as a tribute and as a piece to be performed by that unit’s band.
In Ziehrer’s case, as a respected military bandmaster and composer, such marches were part of his repertoire for regimental concerts and official events, reinforcing his connection to the military bands he led.
