The vast Sahara Desert is rapidly expanding, devouring fertile lands every day and forcing millions to flee their homes in search of safety. Desertification in Africa is transforming once-lush grasslands into barren wastelands, destroying vital freshwater sources such as the famous Lake Chad, which has shrunk by nearly 90% in recent decades. To address this enormous climate challenge, the United Nations, in collaboration with African nations, has launched an unprecedented project called the Great Green Wall. This initiative is an ambitious plan to create a continuous vegetation barrier 15 km wide and nearly 8,000 km long, stretching across the continent from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, to effectively prevent the encroachment of sand. The initial concept of a simple forest barrier proved a spectacular failure, as the saplings quickly withered under the scorching sun, and local livestock completely destroyed the remaining vegetation. A complete rethinking of the strategy forced scientists to abandon conventional tree species in favor of highly resilient local species such as baobab and various acacias, with thick bark and deep root systems well-suited to the extreme temperatures. An equally crucial step was the revival of an ancient, forgotten Zai technique – the creation of special crescent-shaped pits designed to retain meager rainfall and direct every drop to the tree roots. The success of this large-scale environmental project is now clearly demonstrated by satellite imagery, where a vast, dark green line stretches distinctly across the arid, lifeless regions of Senegal. Beyond blocking strong winds and protecting fertile soil, the robust root systems of mature trees have penetrated the hard soil and created a true hydrodynamic miracle, rapidly raising groundwater levels and filling long-dried wells with fresh water. This Sahel ecological restoration has created a sustainable green economy, generating new jobs for local people through the harvesting of precious acacia resin, known as gum arabic, and the nutrient-rich fruit of the baobab tree. The project faces complex logistical challenges, unpredictable climate change, and internal conflict, but the United Nations continues to actively monitor the region with drones and satellites, striving towards large-scale carbon sequestration and the complete restoration of African nature.
