5 Simple Steps to Loosen Up Your Watercolor Painting and Reach Mastery

How do I paint more loosely and expressively? This is the most common question I get from students. In order to answer this question, please allow me to first demystify "artistic instincts" and show you what is really at the core of all the masterful paintings. Turns out, the key is not about techniques or any "cool tricks" of playing with salt and bubble wraps – but rather, a set of cleanly distilled shapes with high contrast that abstractly yet adequately depict your subject. Once you have found these shapes, then you can use bold brushworks to paint those shapes, thus achieving a painterly, confident look.
This video introduces a 5 step framework designed to help beginners to clearly see and extract shapes from any subjects or photos, progressively yet strategically adding color, textural treatment, wet-on-wet effects, bold brushstrokes… without loosing sight of these shapes and the stark contrast.
