Ancient Byzantine Shipwreck Reveals Massive Gold Treasure Off Croatia | 7th Century Discovery | AJ1Z

Archaeologists have uncovered one of the richest Byzantine shipwrecks ever discovered beneath the Adriatic Sea off Croatia's Mljet Island.
The underwater excavation revealed more than 600 grams of gold, including rare gold coins, a golden signet ring bearing an emperor's image, jeweled buckles decorated with rubies, emeralds, and pearls, and other priceless artifacts dating back to the 7th–8th century.
Experts believe the ship was carrying a high-ranking Byzantine official rather than ordinary merchants. Researchers say the discovery provides remarkable insights into the final years of the Byzantine Empire, Mediterranean trade routes, and the transition from the Roman world to the medieval era.
