The bicolor butterflyfish (Prognathodes dichrous), also known as the bastard cunningfish or hedgehog butterflyfish, is a rare and fascinating deep-reef species found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly around tropical offshore reefs. It is best known for its striking two-tone coloration, with the front portion of the body appearing pale yellow to white and the rear half much darker brown to black, creating a dramatic contrast. A dark band runs through the eye, and the fins may show soft yellow or translucent tones. Like other members of the Prognathodes genus, it inhabits deep rocky reefs and steep reef slopes, often beyond recreational diving depths. This species typically grows to about 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) and feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton. Its unusual appearance and deep-water habitat make it one of the more mysterious butterflyfish species.
