So certain things can take your look from 100 down to 50 or maybe 30.
And in today's video, we're going to look at what those things are.
Hello Intentional Woman. Welcome back to my channel.
My name is Ayane May and let's just jump into it.
You know I like to jump into it.
So the first thing that can not necessarily cheapen but diminish, downplay, devalue.
Let me check Google.
So the first thing that can downgrade your appearance
is wearing an apple watch on a cocktail or evening dress.
This is such a huge fashion faux pas because these two things do not complement each other.
A cocktail or evening dress is an elegant and formal attire.
While an apple watch is for a more casual and sporty look.
So when you pair these two things together,
it diminishes that sophisticated appearance you're going for.
Every time I see a woman with an apple watch and she has on a cocktail dress,
it's always jarring.
It's like that game of which one of these doesn't belong here.
I know you can say to me,
Oh Ayane May but there are apple watches with chain straps.
And I tell you the same thing.
It doesn't work because we can see the face of the watch,
we know it's an apple watch and then when it lights up,
let's not even talk about that.
So pair your cocktail dresses with an equally elegant accessory
like dainty jewelry or classic timepieces.
Remember different accessories for different aesthetic or occasion.
Oh number two is something that happened to me a couple of months ago
and every time I think about it, I cringe.
And that is visible underwear.
This can be the lines showing through your outfit or the actual lingerie itself.
For me, it was the actual lingerie.
So a few months ago, I was at an event having a wonderful time
and these PR guys were busy taking pictures.
After a few days, they sent the pictures to me and oh my goodness,
I had on this strapless top and the whole of here, my bra was showing.
It was so embarrassing because it instantly chippened my look.
Something similar happened to someone a few days ago.
So I was walking out of this cafe and this lady walked in.
She had on pants and a top and she looked so good.
Sat down, started working.
A couple of hours in, she stands up to go make a phone call
and when she turns, oh my goodness, her panty line was beyond visible.
It was so bad because you could actually see where the panties
had gone in between her bum crack and I was like,
that doesn't look good because it really doesn't.
That is why you need to familiarize yourself with the concept
of different lingerie for different outfits.
And here are a couple of tips that I can share that will help.
When you're wearing trousers, you want to avoid full panties
because they just don't work.
Full panties are better off being worn under fair dresses.
If you have on a trouser, go for a thumb.
If your bra line is always showing up here,
that Z line, I think there's a word for it.
I'll find out what that is.
If that's always happening to you, it's because of two things.
The first reason is that you're wearing the wrong bra design
for that particular outfit.
While the second one could be that that bra hasn't been properly fitted.
So it's not your size.
And that has made your breasts to scale out at the top, creating that Z.
So all you have to do is get yourself the right bra.
I have a comprehensive video on how you can fit and choose a bra.
It was my first YouTube video.
So be gentle.
I'll leave a card here to the video.
Also link it in the description.
You can watch it after this one.
Another tip I can also share is to be careful of colorful lingerie
under a white outfit, even flesh colored lingerie.
Sometimes they show through.
Yesterday, I was about to go out and I had on this flesh colored lingerie.
When I stood in front of the mirror,
I realized that it was still showing through my white skirt.
And I said, thank you, Lord.
I didn't leave the house like that.
So you want to be very careful with this.
Now number three.
And this one is something that most people don't think about.
And that is your posture.
I'm sure you're wondering, okay, how does that work?
I'll explain.
So imagine that you are at an event and a woman walks in.
She's elegantly dressed.
Hair, makeup, nails, accessories, outfit.
Everything is on point.
And you admire her as she walks to her seat.
Then you turn away to talk to your friend.
And after a while, your eyes act to scan the room again and it settles on her.
But this time she is slouched over.
Either looking at her phone or she's seated in an undignified way.
What would come to your mind?
I can assure you, even without you realizing it consciously,
everything about her appearance diminishes.
Everything downgrades.
But if your eyes had settled on her and she was seated with a good posture,
you would just think to yourself, my goodness, what a lady.
Your posture is a huge asset to your appearance.
And that is why on this channel, we talk about it every two days.
So you need to work on your posture.
It's something I'm working on every day.
So you can join me on that journey.
I have a video on this channel that specifically covers ladylike presence.
It covers posture, walking in heels, sitting, standing,
exiting and entering a car, picking up items, feminine charm and presence.
You will love that video.
I will link it in the description.
Number four, stretchy camisole.
Don't get me wrong.
Stretchy camisoles have a place in our wardrobe.
Either when you want to wear it under a cardigan or a sweater.
What I'm referring to here is wearing a stretchy camisole
as an inner piece on a suit or a jacket.
It does nothing for your look.
Especially if that stretchy camisole is made with a really cheap fabric
or maybe the fabric is already peeling.
Because that fabric peels very easily.
However, if you were to switch out that stretchy camisole
for a silk, chiffon or even cotton camisole,
you will notice that it instantly elevates your look.
So if you work in the corporate world,
you may want to stock up on much needed silky camisoles, right?
Number five, outdated makeup techniques.
Certain makeup techniques can diminish your look.
Examples are using a red eyebrow pencil,
heavy contouring, overdrawn or very thin eyebrows.
There's something about thin eyebrows that just makes me think of aliens.
I don't know why.
Matte foundation overload.
Heavy dark lip liner.
When your style is not goth, right?
Frosted eyeshadow.
There was a time when this was trending
and I was one of those people who loved frosted eyeshadows.
Thank God not anymore.
And even bold inner eyeliner.
All of these have a way of not just deepening a look,
but also aging the person.
Before now, most makeup techniques did not complement our natural features.
It made us unrecognizable.
Like that trend of shaving off your eyebrow and then penciling it in.
It didn't look good.
But recent times, you can notice that there is more emphasis
on enhancing your natural appearance.
That is why we're being encouraged to fill in our eyebrows in a way that looks natural.
Foundation is now more skin-like than before.
And so on and so on.
So you have to update yourself on these techniques.
You don't have to know everything.
But the basics are important.
Like a good skid walk.
And that includes choosing the right foundation color.
Knowing how to apply it in a way that it doesn't become cakey or cracked.
Light contouring, concealing, highlighting, bronzing and all of these things.
You need to know about them.
That way, you can develop a makeup routine that looks elegant, minimal and beautiful.
Number 6.
Visible Lace wig glue.
The purpose of lace glue was to create a natural hairline for front towels.
So when that glue becomes very visible, that's impossible.
Because it chippens the overall appearance.
It's distracting to people.
It suggests a lack of attention to detail.
That the person couldn't afford professional services.
And it can also give the impression that the wig is of a low quality.
The worst is when that glue starts to look sticky and messy.
Which can give people the impression that you have really low grooming standards.
This is why I stopped wearing frontal wigs.
Because they are really high maintenance.
So if you love frontal wigs, you want to be careful with this.
You want to invest time in learning how to wear them properly.
YouTube is an amazing resource for this.
Number 7 relates to number 6.
And that is baby hair.
I am tired of the baby hair.
I am really.
And I'm not talking about the clean, subtle, sophisticated baby hair.
Because that's possible.
Oh no, I'm talking about that dramatic, greasy, heavy, untidy edges of a baby hair.
That baby hair that shares boundaries with eyebrows.
It can be such a tacky look.
The worst is when the hair doesn't require baby hair.
But baby hair is added to it.
I'm always like, what's going on here?
What are we doing?
What are we trying to achieve?
The bottom line is, it doesn't look good.
So if you want to do the baby hair, aim for a natural, subtle styling with minimal product.
This will create a very elegant and put together appearance.
Number 8.
Overly long lashes and nails.
Except you're a rap artist, I don't see the need for nails that are up to there.
Or lashes that can actually help you fly if a strong wind blows.
I mean, if Cardi B, Nicki Minaj or Gloria started wearing short nails and short lashes,
we would think something is wrong, right?
Because we expect that aesthetic from them.
It is industry standard.
So barring that, there's no need for it.
And as someone who used to wear long nails, I can tell you it chippens your appearance.
It's impractical, unnatural, hard to maintain, interferes with daily activity.
It's dramatic and not elegant at all.
And the worst thing with very long nails is that it makes it so easy for you to damage
your natural nails.
I don't know if this has happened to you.
You had on long nails, hit it somewhere and your natural nails split inside.
It's a horrible experience.
And then when you take off the press on nails, it has a way of making you look unhealthy
because of damaged nails.
It's something I've been through.
So I can tell you from experience, it is not worth it.
So just keep your nails short and your lashes as natural as possible.
Number nine, tarnished jewelry.
I understand that we're all working with different budgets here.
But if you want to look sophisticated, then you want to avoid wearing tarnished jewelry
or jewelry that turn your skin green.
Because that instantly communicates that you're wearing jewelry of really poor quality.
I know that if you're working with a tight budget, you're wondering, okay Ayane, what
can I wear?
I have the answer for you.
Go for jewelry made with stainless steel.
When I couldn't afford gold, that was what I wore.
And I tell you, some of them last three, four years.
Have you ever seen a well-made stainless steel spoon or fork?
Tarnish, no matter how many times you wash it.
The same principle applies here.
If you can find a store that stock really good stainless steel jewelry, trust me, you're
set.
No matter the budget you're working with.
I know a couple of them.
I will link them in the description so you can go get some pieces for yourself.
Number 10, wrinkled clothes.
When I see someone in a wrinkled outfit, two things always come to mind.
And that is disorganized or careless.
Yes, you must really not care to walk out of the house wearing wrinkled clothes.
I understand if it's a fabric like linen because we know the wonders linen can perform.
But outside that, there is no reason to leave the house with clothes that haven't been
ironed.
It will chip in your appearance and give the wrong impression.
Ergo, disorganized or careless.
If you're in Nigeria or in some parts of Africa, where we often have power issues,
you want to try as much as you can to make sure you always have maybe two to three outfits
pressed and ready to be used.
That way, when the power companies decide to do whatever it is they do, you know you
have nothing to worry about.
That way, you can always look elegant and put together.
Number 11, dirty feet.
I know your feet are all the way down there, but you still have to take care of them.
It can be easy to focus more on your manicure because you think, oh this is the one people
notice first.
However, it's worse when somebody sees you.
You look all put together and their eyes track down your body, down to your feet, either
to admire your shoe.
And what they see there is cracked feet, chipped polish or dirty toenails.
It speaks to poor personal hygiene and neglect of self-care.
The same way you feel uncomfortable when your manicure chips, is the same way you should
feel when your pedicure chips.
There shouldn't be anything like, oh it's my feet, I can manage it.
No, no, no.
We're not managing it.
Alright?
And finally, scruffy shoes or bags.
And this encompasses everything you can think of.
From dirty, dusty and even peeling shoes or bags.
If you have shoes or bags that are peeling, don't just leave them in your wardrobe.
Because one day, you will mistakenly put it on.
Instead, go get it repaired if that's possible.
And before you step out of the house, always take a look at your shoes to make sure that
it is neat.
And if it is not, no matter how much in a hurry you are, please get it cleaned.
Okay?
The little details matter.
Better yet, get yourself some dust bags.
This way you know that your bags and shoes are always protected.
And that's it for today's video.
