This video analyzes a rare and controversial sequence involving pitcher Garrett Cole, where a technical glitch with the pitch clock led to a disputed balk call. Through \"hot mic\" audio and visual breakdown, the narrator explores the confusion between the pitcher and the umpires regarding the timing of the play.
We've got hot mics, lip reading, and a situation that I've never done a breakdown on.
The pitch clock has given us lots of drama, but this one I've never seen before.
Garrett Cole on the bump.
This one's brought to you by SeatGeek.
He's got a runner on first.
They're down two.
Be loud.
Brandon Lau at the plate.
Ball one, ball two.
And now we'll bring the audio in from the field because you can hear a lot of what's said.
So just to slow that down for you for one second.
Cole steps off.
Wait, wait, wait.
There's no pitch clock.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
There's no pitch clock because he got called for a balk.
He says, there's no pitch clock.
Oh, can all of you see that?
And then you've got umpire Adrian Johnson.
He comes in.
He says, because I'm looking at you.
Relax.
Talk about it.
Okay.
He's like, I can't see it because I'm looking at you.
In the background, Jazz Chisholm Jr. can be heard saying, the clock turned off at seven.
I don't know why I gave him a Southern accent.
And Boone's like, all right, thumbs up.
Talk about it.
Appreciate it.
Boone was like, am I going to get met?
No.
Okay.
Thumbs up.
Great.
All right.
Back to the hot mics.
Here's Cole explaining the situation.
So it just cut out at 10 seconds.
Now he's like, oh, the umpires are talking.
I hope they believe me.
Please believe me.
So this is the crew chief, Adrian Johnson, and he's going to get his friends together.
And he says, he says something happened with the pitch clock.
I was looking at him for a balk.
So I'm not looking at the pitch clock.
I'm looking at the pitcher.
So home plate ump says, you didn't see it?
And he says, I didn't.
But you called a balk?
Yeah.
There's a balk.
No, Cole can't believe it.
They're not going to believe me.
Everything turned off.
He's like, well, I can't see the pitch clock.
I'm looking at him for a balk.
And yeah, he balks.
Cole's standing there getting his heart broken as he hears this.
They say, yep, go.
Yep, balk.
Yep.
It's a balk.
Yeah.
That's what we called.
Some more hot mics.
So that's very, very faint.
You can't see his lips.
But I wanted to play the audio for you because the umpire in the background says,
even if the pitch clock goes off, you got to pitch the ball.
So that's what they're deciding the ruling is.
Cole still tries to plead his case.
He's talking to him.
He's like, I'm standing there right at seven seconds.
And the pitch clock goes off.
All right.
I'm listening.
I'm just saying.
I love the little look Cole gives the jazz here.
He's like, hey, hey, he's listening to me.
Like, let's not make him mad at us.
You know, please, please.
I think he's going to change his mind.
At seven seconds, it goes off.
And then I looked out there too.
I looked at both of these and I looked out there.
You know, I didn't see it go off, but I mean, even if it does, you gotta throw a pitch.
No, but how, what do you mean?
Pitch clock goes off in the middle of the play.
I didn't turn it off.
Well, I don't know, man.
Have some feel.
And that was the decision.
Boone's not happy about it.
He walks off.
So let's watch.
And for those of you that are still here and you don't know what the hell's going on, there's a
pitch clock and the pitcher has to throw the ball before that clock hits zero.
But the pitcher likes to use it to his advantage and wait.
Cause now that batter just has to stand there and wait.
And Cole's like, all right, I'm going to wait, make you wait till you're uncomfortable to your
little jumpy.
And then I'm going to pitch it.
So he's sees it.
And then he looks at the runner.
You see a little dip in his head.
And while he looks at the runner, it goes off.
So when he picks his head back up to look at the clock again, he's like, whoa, wait,
what happened?
And the pitch clock went off.
Now this is just a guy upstairs in a booth hitting a button.
So I don't know how it goes off.
The umpires don't look at the clock.
The home plate umpire has a wristband that buzzes at zero.
So it is an interesting situation because all the umpires, they don't look at the clock.
So Cole is just trying to let them know, Hey, the clock isn't on the clocks off.
And they're like, Bach, we're looking at you for a Bach.
And if Cole doesn't break his hands first, that's a Bach.
When there's a runner on base, you can't be doing this and break your hands because you
know, the runners, they stare at the pitcher's feet to make sure if he's going home or if
he's going to throw a pickoff.
And if all the pitcher had to do is just break his hand and throw, it would be mayhem.
It would be sloppy.
So that's really what happened.
All he has to do is step off and then turn to the umpire and say, Hey, the clock's off.
But the fact he broke his hands and they all call Bach right away, umpires hate taking
calls back.
But look, as soon as he does it, you can see the runner and the batter, they both beat
the ump.
They're like, Hey, you can't do that.
And then Bach Bach home plate.
I'm just like time, time, but everyone called it a Bach.
So they don't want to go back on it.
And now that takes away the inning ending double play, which Cole was a jazzed about.
Now there's a runner on second.
He's got to strike him out.
Fastball down the middle, fastball up top curve off of that three pitches.
He gets that out.
He's angry.
He's honing his anger.
Fastball right down the middle, fastball up and in.
That's a pop out caught by McMahon done.
So if you're wondering who runs the clock, is it just someone that can mess with the
opposing pitcher now?
Does the home state?
No, they're called the FTC, the field timing coordinator.
And they're a person that sits with a box and they hit stop.
Go stop.
Go.
So that that person must've spilled coffee or a fly flew up their nose or something,
and they stopped the clock.
What are you going to do?
It happens.
I do think it shouldn't have been a Bach, but I don't know.
That's not my job.
I'm just a guy who makes videos, been doing it for a long time.
