Hitting the pier heads after a big flip on Lake Michigan! Me and my buddy Brock jump on my new Tiara and put together some quick limits on staging King Salmon in Northern Michigan.
A fishing captain and his crew head out for a morning of trolling for King Salmon near the pier heads. Using a variety of plugs and depths, they experience a highly successful outing, catching numerous mature silver fish. The captain also announces the official launch of his legal charter business, expressing gratitude to his online community for their support.
Oh my, that thing is outmoded to the bone.
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
Hey there!
Well, that was quick.
Waking up ahead of my alarm.
That is because we are going to be going out trolling plugs.
We've got first mate of Fishing Affair, Brock, joining us.
And obviously, stinky blood licker, scupper drinker.
We're plug fishing today.
For whatever reason, I don't know if it's the action, the rattle, the colors,
it fires these big kings up.
Usually end of July, early August when these first flips come through
are when I catch some of my biggest fish.
This is an accessible way of fishing, whether you have a small boat,
jigging, casting, when the cold water's in tight,
it's pretty much accessible to everybody.
So you don't need a big fancy boat like this to go catch fish.
I'm going to be running charters out of this boat.
I just got all my documentation done,
and we are officially by the books legal,
and I'm super excited to announce that I'll be doing this throughout the summer,
and I have a bunch of sweet videos planned as well.
We're free.
We're going to be powering out here in a second, almost to the pier head.
Going to take her about a half mile, mile north, turn around,
and then we're going to set up a troll to go across the pier.
Starting up here in about 40 feet of water,
and we're going to get these plugs out.
Last night it was pretty good. They fired up right away for us.
Today my hopes are high, so I'm pretty sure we'll get them to fire up
and get some good content for you guys.
He runs for Fish and Affair Charter.
It's his dad's business.
That's who actually I got all my hours for my captain's license through.
I first made it with him.
I got you at the Seahawk.
This one is probably my all-time favorite plug.
You cannot beat this.
How far back are you running them?
I think I'm going to go like 30.
That's a solid number.
30 down like 20?
25, yeah, probably.
We've got one downrigger rod, we've got one diver rod,
and then we've got a leadcore rod here.
This is a three-color, so every color gets you down about five feet.
All six rods are in.
Hopefully it gets chaotic here in a moment.
We've got one or two coming up and sniffing our dock.
There it is.
Yep, there's fish.
I'm a two-color.
That's a two-color.
Two-color, yeah.
This one came out on two-color.
This one was getting about 10, 12 feet down.
Yeah.
All right, I'm on my last color.
You can see them on the surface back there.
Yeah.
And boom, number one.
Fish number one, all green glow.
Can't go wrong.
Nice probably 13, 14-pound king salmon.
Chomping on some bait in tight.
Rigger?
Oh, yeah.
There you go, Brock.
And I got blood all over me.
Brock's got a rigger firing.
Oh, it's already here?
Oh, my gosh.
It's right in my high diver.
Oh, that's so ugly.
No way.
It's out.
Oh, I just slipped.
Yep.
Good stuff, Brock.
Oh, oh, yeah.
Now I got one on my rigger.
Okay.
It's going to get chaotic.
I don't even know if I got time for the camera right now.
There's a bloodbath on the deck, and Barrett is way too intrigued.
There's fish.
Yep.
He's there?
Yep.
All right.
We have three rods in the water currently.
Yeah, and we're just getting destroyed.
Oh, crap.
You're back.
Dude, you're back on your rigger rod.
Your rigger rod is out.
Maybe it's not that bad.
Yeah.
We got a little kicker here.
All right.
Sweet.
Just keep them hard to the right if you can.
It might be a better one.
Right here, diver, diver, diver.
Diver?
Oh, my gosh, dude.
Oh, my goodness.
Okay.
Well, we're doing this.
Yeah.
Oh.
Is that a coho or a steelhead?
What is that?
He's just taking one path.
Got him?
Yep.
Oh, you cheated.
You put out the white slick.
All right.
Bring him in.
Hold up the tuna.
Yeah, that's our biggest one today for sure.
Oh, yeah.
Well, that was quick.
This is the dandy Brock that's had on his side.
Came on the three color.
That's a nice fish.
Finally a big one.
Yeah.
Beautiful fish.
Hold him up.
A double-double.
Two back-to-back doubles in a row.
Got some quality fish.
Finally got a kicker.
A couple little ones.
Can't beat it.
Toss him in the cooler.
Oh.
Darn it.
Thought I had it.
Got a good box going.
There we go.
Starting to fill up a little bit.
So that was technically our first pass because we went north about three-quarters of a mile.
If that, we set up in 35 feet of water.
Went on a south troll this whole time.
So now we are going to do another 180 and see what the north troll delivers.
Barrett, you're supposed to be licking all this blood up, dude.
You're just been getting in the way the whole time.
48 on the north side of the pier, but it went to 53 on the south side.
Oh, yep, yep.
Oh, yeah.
You sure you don't got the dredge line?
Dude, I might.
If we do, this is a big one.
Oh, my goodness.
That thing was out 30 feet.
It's at two.
Oh, my gosh.
I'd rear my people.
Dude, those are head shakes.
How light's your drag, be honest?
Yeah.
Okay.
We got a kicker, boys.
That's your spin doctor, isn't it?
Yep.
All right.
Maybe I'll put one on my side.
The only rod that hasn't gone is my high diver.
Do you want to try the hand line or what do you want?
Just look at the build on it.
Just a stocky one.
Yeah.
I thought it was a lot bigger.
It pulled out 250 feet of line.
Yeah.
That was crazy.
I haven't had one pull on me like that this year.
If there's one bait you absolutely have to have, double white slick with the pickled
sunshine fly.
Undefeated combo right there.
Pretty much the most generic setup that you can possibly run.
Everybody runs it, and it still goes every single day.
It's a staple in pretty much everybody's lineup.
That's sick.
Is that seven?
Seven.
Number seven.
We're still trying to complete our 180.
We're going to do our turn, and we got burned.
It's crazy.
I'm just up here getting shots on my camera, standing on the pulpit of this boat, and it's
just crazy to think where everything's gone the last couple of years.
A lot of risk taken to pursue this passion of mine, just stepping into the whole guiding
thing, especially when there's so many credible people that have been doing it so much longer
than myself.
To say it's a dream come true is really an understatement.
I wouldn't have this boat.
I wouldn't have anything without the people that watch and supported my channel.
I know I don't post a lot, but if it weren't for YouTube and my Twitch, I don't know if
I would have customers.
This is where, essentially, I built my entire business.
And even though I don't post a lot, I owe so much to you guys, and I would not be here
without you.
So I just want to say thanks.
It's just a crazy moment, watching the sunrise.
Got a cooler full of kings, and it's just like, damn.
We're here.
We're doing this.
I never thought in a million years would be the owners of such a gorgeous boat.
Grateful moment, boys.
Appreciate y'all, man.
For real.
Thank you so much.
The one trade-off is if you're going to fish in tight in the shallower water, the bite
shuts off a lot quicker than it will offshore.
So that said, sometimes when it gets to this time in the morning, it's still only 7 o'clock
right now.
I like to downsize my plugs to these smaller silver hordes, or even Dreamweaver makes size
3.
Well, it used to be a size 3, but I think it's technically a size 4 plug.
But essentially, the smallest plug that Silver Horde and Dreamweaver sells, it has a little
wider action, but you got to run them a little slower.
So when these fish start getting a little more finicky, because that sun's coming up
and they can feel the shallow water a little bit more, I like to downsize and slow my speed
down.
Oh, fish.
There we go.
Bell's in super slow mode.
Yeah, I was just getting B-roll.
Nice.
He's still there?
Yeah.
Nice.
So the bite was in slow mode?
Yes.
Dude, that's so cool.
Are you going to bury this thing in my three color?
Dude, I'm trying to steer it out.
No, you're not.
This thing is right under my board.
Come on.
There's nothing I can really do about it.
You could try pulling on the rod for a start.
Yeah, then he's going to come right off.
A little bit.
Oh, that's a nice fish.
Our board's got a fish on.
Late morning flurry here.
Small fish, but.
Medium.
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hey there.
Hold up.
Oh my gosh.
Okay.
You got that by yourself?
Yep.
You have to let him freak out for a second.
I got to get this net ready.
You lost him?
All right.
I still got mine at least.
Oh, the chrome head.
Okay.
We downsized and smashed.
Three bites insta.
It's a nice fish.
Let's go.
We got a killer video.
Heck yeah, we do.
Good stuff, man.
Went silent on us for a good hour, hour and a half,
and then we had a borderline triple.
If Brock didn't get that first one in,
we hit that double right after.
It would have been basically a triple,
but all nice, clean, mature kings.
Nice silver fish.
Got another one here on the ground,
and yeah, I think we're satisfied.
It was a good morning.
Just wanted to give you the rundown on the new boat,
show you what a good old cold water bead down looks like
out in front of the pier heads,
and honestly, you guys can do this too.
You can cast spoons off the pier.
You can jig.
Obviously, trolling plugs,
and I don't care what anybody says.
Sometimes I think trolling gets a bad rap,
but I mean, these fish are hitting 20 feet behind the boat
and burning almost 300 feet of line.
There's nothing that's not fun about that.
I think sometimes when people reel in those super deep coppers
on planer boards, you know, it gives it a bad rap,
but these fish burn, and they'll have your arms sore for sure,
but we're going to go back.
I'm going to go over some of our hot baits.
We're going to taxi back into the slip,
and then I think we're going to get some breakfast.
If you guys want to use any of the products mentioned,
I'll have a link to them below.
All right, let's get out of here.
Just going to go over the hot baits really quick.
First things first, we had our first fish come on two color,
Green Glow Silverhoard Ace High.
Second fish came on the Outdown Seahawk Ace High,
absolute staple,
and no surprise, the third bite.
This was the lucky charms.
Not long after, Glow Ladderback
with a nice purple stripe down the side of it,
impulse buy, paid off.
We didn't waste money on that one.
Brock did slip out a White Slick
with a Pickled Sunshine Fly on it.
I thought we were running all plugs.
He snuck a Rotator out,
and this took two really nice fish.
When the sun came up, we downsized.
We slowed our troll down a little bit,
put out three plugs specifically,
one being this Glow Wonder Bread pattern.
This took a nice fish on my Outdown.
We did have a planer board fish
that got off on the back of the net.
This was their classic Chrome Redhead.
Really good plug,
but we were on two colors, three colors,
two 107 High Divers about 40, 50 feet back
on a three setting, all of which you can buy on FishUSA.
I'm going to have a link down below in the description.
If you click that link,
if you check out with any sort of this stuff,
it's greatly appreciated.
Otherwise, plenty of awesome local tackle shops
around here, Captain Sharks, PM Expeditions.
But yeah, pretty good day.
We were boxed out by about 8 o'clock.
If you guys enjoyed, please leave a like,
comment, subscribe if you want to book your trips,
Chiefstrips.com.
I'm pretty well open.
I just finally got all my credentials
to be able to essentially charter in this boat.
So we got a late season start,
but the fishing is awesome and if you guys want to get out,
we can take up to six people.
Hopefully I'll get another video out for you guys soon.
I would not be here without you.
Thank you so much. See you in the next one.
