What's up guys, I'm Drew Binsky and in this video I'm going to show you what $10 can get you in
beautiful Reunion Island, a French overseas territory in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Oh, we are just above the clouds. This is insane.
This place is super interesting and I can't wait to tell you all about it.
Reunion Island is a gorgeous island off the coast of Africa known for its dramatic mountains,
volcanoes, and rainforests. Although it was originally uninhabited,
it was settled by the French in the 17th century.
Shaping the vibrant Creole culture it has today.
What's up guys, I'm here with Lisa. Hi Lisa.
Right now we are in one of the busy markets in Saint-Denis, which is the capital city.
We're walking around the market trying to meet some people, trying to make sense of it.
First impressions of this place is number one,
this is the most culture I've seen in the last three days, which is wonderful.
And number two, every face is different.
So that's just normal for you that everyone just has a different face?
It is totally normal.
You ever come to this neighborhood by the way?
I think I came here once.
In your life?
Yes.
And you're from here?
That's not the biggest market here.
Got it.
It's eight o'clock in the morning, it's still early, so we're just trying to feel it out.
100% Reunion.
This is literally like the root of a tree.
He wants to know if you know about the pear.
P-E-A-R?
Yeah, Pear of the Earth.
Can I see that?
That's a fruit that's underground.
It looks like a potato.
I eat it?
Okay, you go first.
There's not really...
A taste?
Yeah.
All right, I'm about to try this pear of the earth.
Yeah.
Kind of has a texture of an apple, texture of an apple, but no flavor.
He says sometimes it's sweeter.
This is for you, just for your time, for your time.
Donation.
He doesn't want to take it?
He doesn't want to take it.
He said he did not waste his time.
Hey, thank you so much.
Hey bro, can I buy that thing?
Yeah, this one.
I just ordered this pear that I've never heard of before, but it looks like a potato.
Okay.
Yeah, very good.
Thank you.
I'm not sure if you're aware or not, but most of the world has never heard of Reunion Island,
unless you're from France.
You know that, right?
Yeah, I guess.
So when you travel outside of this country and you tell people you're from Reunion,
what do they say?
They don't know.
And if they don't know, like if you go to the US, what would you say if Americans don't know?
I would say it's a French island next to Africa.
Yeah, I think if you said Madagascar, they would know.
Yeah.
It's so crazy to me that like no one knows this place because we are,
it's beautiful.
Like there's people living here, there's markets, there's things happening.
This pineapple juice is insanely good.
Like these fresh little small pineapples from the island.
This is as good of a pineapple juice you can find anywhere in the world.
What is this part of town like known for?
It's a sketchy area.
So if I went anywhere else in the island and I told them,
hey like let's go here, they would say like...
Yeah, if you want to meet gangs people.
Really?
They're around here.
Gangsters?
Yeah.
I want to meet gangsters, but in this market it doesn't seem like there's any gangsters.
That's a papaya?
Yes.
What?
In my country, watermelons are this big.
I love those.
Let's get some.
Lisa tells me that the best local food on the island is samosa.
So there's a shop right in front of us.
These guys are bumping music and we're going to try some samosa.
What's the best samosa you have?
Spicy.
Thank you.
You speak English, good.
This is a cheese and chicken samosa.
Yeah, smoked chicken.
Smoked chicken.
Whoa, that is so creamy.
It's like a perfect blend of like cheese and chicken mixing like, look at that.
I've had samosas all over India and all over the world, but they've never tasted like this.
After fueling up at the market,
I'm taking my wife Deanna out for a drive to explore this beautiful island.
All right, we are now about to road trip around Reunion Island.
We're starting here at the beach level and we're going to climb up the mountain
to the Piton, that's what they're called.
These high mountain peaks slash volcanoes that are seen all over the island.
There's some bigger ones and some smaller ones,
but we're going to the main one right now.
It's going to take an hour drive.
So we've driven exactly 30 minutes from the water from the beach
and now we've entered like this mystical mountain foggy landscape.
It was so like cloudy and misty and all of a sudden it became
really sunny when we get to the top here.
That's amazing, a whole different day.
I feel like we've gone through like 10 climates in the last hour.
Wow, look at that.
Look at these yellow flowers.
I can't believe we were on the beach 45 minutes ago.
What? This is crazy.
I'm taking a little pee break and like damn, even the rock, even the ground feels like Mars.
It's crazy that like so few people in the world have even heard of Reunion Island.
It's just this place, the middle of the Indian Ocean,
that's inhabited by French people and Indians and Africans and Chinese
all mixed together to make this beautiful Creole culture.
And there's almost a million people living here without anybody knowing.
It's crazy to me.
Got French license plates.
Look at that.
Holy crap, that was totally worth it.
Like we are just above the clouds.
This is insane.
Look at this little village down there.
So crazy how amazing this is.
What are the best things to do for a road trip in Reunion?
This was number one.
Now I can see why.
It's so rugged.
You just have these cliffs that just get swallowed by this cloud.
It's absolutely 1000% delivered.
As soon as we get back down to the beach areas on the coastal side,
it's where all the people are living.
We were just on top of a mountain.
One hour later, we are on the beach.
There's a lovely little boardwalk here on this beach.
Apparently, it's the nicest beach on the island.
This beach is called Boucan Cano and it's apparently the nicest little beach on the island.
And I can see why.
We just rolled up to a little outdoor food court by the sea.
Gonna get some tacos because I see it offered.
I didn't realize this was a taco.
Look at that.
I ordered a taco here and it's like all these fries inside.
Look at this.
I think you ordered a panini.
No, I ordered a taco.
Look, it's all fries.
Look at that inside.
Like, my god.
All in all, I got a pear of the earth, pineapple juice, an avocado,
samosas, and tacos for a total of $10.
But the breathtaking views we got to share were priceless.
I hope you enjoyed exploring Reunion Island with me.
