For Machikane Base, the answer is nearly a year of weekend work, a budget of roughly ¥500,000, and the determination to build almost everything by hand. Starting with bare ground, the couple pours the slab, raises the timber frame, protects it with a galvalume shell, fabricates custom acrylic windows and an insulated door, then transforms the interior into a carefully organized workshop with plastered walls, handmade storage and a live-edge worktop.

But the project does not stop at the shed. The surrounding slope is reshaped with retaining walls, elevated timber structures, concrete steps, gravel drainage and handmade paving slabs cast to resemble aged wood.
