The Factory That Built America’s Largest Surviving Shovel—and Left 52 Men Beneath 120-Ton Steel

Big Brutus weighed 11 million pounds, stood 16 stories tall, and could tear 150 tons of earth from the ground in a single bite. But it was far too large to leave the Bucyrus-Erie factory as one complete machine.

Instead, America’s largest surviving electric shovel was built in Wisconsin, broken into enormous sections, and shipped to Kansas aboard 150 railroad cars.

What arrived at the mine in 1962 was not a finished machine. It was the world’s heaviest puzzle.

For the next 11 months, 52 men worked beneath sections of steel weighing as much as 120 tons. They balanced crawler frames on timber cribbing, guided suspended machinery by hand, fought freezing winters and Kansas winds, and trusted that every cable, crane and wooden support would hold.

One failed lift could have crushed an entire crew.

When Big Brutus was finally completed, it consumed 7,200 volts of electricity, required only three men to operate, and moved so slowly that a person could easily walk faster than it. Yet its 90-cubic-yard bucket could swallow enough earth to fill several railroad cars every 55 seconds.

It worked around the clock for 11 years before the coal beneath it became too expensive to reach.

The machine had been built to move almost anything on Earth. But when its working life ended, it was too large and too expensive to move itself.

Today, Big Brutus still stands in Kansas exactly where its final shift ended—an 11-million-pound monument to the factory that designed it, the men who assembled it, and the industrial age that believed no machine could ever be too large.
