The Iditarod Trail in Alaska is one of the most famous trails in the world. It's the only winter trail in the National Trails system. Along the Iditarod are many difficult sections, but one that grew in lore is Crow Pass, near Anchorage, as one of the few ways through the mountains before the railroad was built. It was treacherous and full of avalanche danger. Despite the dangers it was a historically important route for a time during the gold rush. Today it is one of the best sections of hiking trails in Alaska.
