THORESBY HALL ONE OF THE LAST GREAT HOUSES TO BE BUILT in England... see the state rooms and grounds

Good morning friends and welcome back to the channel. So where have we come to today Ant? Thorsby Hall. Thorsby Hall and it's in Nottinghamshire. It's a magnificent grade one listed building sitting right next to Sherwood Forest. It was built in 1864, has some magnificent principal rooms and we're just going to take a look in there and show you around. It's part of the Warners hotel group isn't it? It is so you can actually stay here if you'd like to which is an added bonus. So do you want to come and take a look with us? Let's go. It was in 1864 that Sidney Pierpont, the third Earl Manvers, commissioned the celebrated architect Anthony Salvin to demolish the original house which had stood for only a little over 100 years and replace it with the present magnificent house we see here today. The new house was built approximately 500 metres to the north of the old house and was completed by 1871. It measures an enormous 180 feet by 157 feet. The impressive great hall we see here with its romantic minstrels gallery is 62 feet long and an incredible 46 feet high. We will later on in the video enjoy sitting by the huge fireplace enjoying a drink. The house stayed in the family until 1955 when the sixth Earl died without a male heir and the title became extinct. Thorsby however remained in the possession of his wife the Countess and their daughter Lady Roselle Rains until being sold in 1979. The vast collection of furniture and paintings was kept by the family who built a new house on the far side of the lake. So it's another very very chilly day. We've just been inside the house which we hope you enjoyed and we're just going to take a look outside now. This house has got 50 acres of gardens and it's said to have the finest rose garden in England. Obviously we're a bit early for that. So this house was home to the Pierpont family. Construction started in 1864 and it was finished in 1871 so they certainly didn't mess about. When you look at the scale of the place they achieved an awful lot in seven years. So the gardens here are actually quite impressive. It must have been quite a place back in the time. This elevation of the house is almost chateau-like. It's giving us vibes of Harlaxton Manor and let's be honest what country house would be complete without a lovely water feature and this is a very pretty one. So the house has got these very pretty little summer temples in corner of the garden and everywhere you look there's a really nice vista. So it's actually a very very crisp February day so I think we're going to head on back inside and see if we can find somewhere to have a nice latte and maybe even a slice of cake. So we're sitting in the Great Hall and we're just having a very nice hot chocolate and a latte and these are really pleasant surroundings. The main staircase goes off that way and we've got this huge fireplace just to our left. Sadly it's not lit but it is very very impressive. So there's a huge window here with some nice stained glass panels which I'm guessing are family emblems on the glass and it's nice that this place is being maintained the way it is. It's still very very impressive. Well that concludes our visit to Thorsby Hall. We really enjoyed that. It is a magnificent historic house and as Ant pointed out it's actually a hotel now so you can stay there. We hope you enjoyed looking around with us.
