In this video we're going to unlock another incredibly useful verb in Spanish, to be able
to.
In Spanish the verb is poder.
This is the full verb to be able to, but this is what allows us to express I can, you can,
he can and so on, so in a way it's also the verb for can.
Now, if we were to conjugate this down the line, the sounds are
Just like we've seen with the other power verbs we looked at,
this angle of he, she or it, this sound of puede, allows us to easily jump into the angle of
depending on if you add an S or an N onto this conjugation.
The sound for the angle of we is slightly different, it doesn't have the same starting sound.
Then the angle of I is also very easy, we have this O on the end,
which instantly tells us that we are speaking in the first person.
So, taking this sound of puedo on its own, this will mean I am able to or I can,
it's really the same thing, and this is what we are expressing with puedo.
So, once again, going down the line we have puedo for I can, puedes, you can, puede,
he, she or it can, podemos, we can and pueden, they can.
Feel free to pause the video here and spend a little bit of time with these sounds.
The good news is that just like with our other power verbs,
these will all function as a modal verb, so we can easily tag on any verb we like.
For example, to say I can do it would be puedo hacerlo, so I can or I am able to.
Puedo to do it, hacerlo. Puedo hacerlo.
How would you say I can see it? Puedo verlo.
How do you think you would express I can't? It would be no puedo, I can't see it.
No puedo verlo, I can't do it today. No puedo hacerlo hoy.
Let's go through the other angles.
How would you say you can do it? Puedes hacerlo.
She can do it. Puede hacerlo.
We can do it. Podemos hacerlo.
They can do it. Pueden hacerlo.
How would you say I know that he can't do it today?
Sé que no puede hacerlo hoy. We can do it for you.
To express later in Spanish is Más tarde.
Literally, more late. Más tarde.
Now say, we can do it for you later. Podemos hacerlo para ti más tarde.
They can see it now. Pueden verlo ahora.
Can you see it? Puedes verlo?
They can't study here. No pueden estudiar aquí.
The word for tomorrow is Mañana.
Mañana. How would you say I can do it tomorrow?
Puedo hacerlo mañana. We can't do it tomorrow.
No podemos hacerlo mañana.
To express I'm sorry in Spanish, the phrase is Lo siento.
Now say, I'm sorry but we can't do it tomorrow.
Lo siento pero no podemos hacerlo mañana.
To say myself is either Yo mismo or Yo misma.
If you're male then it would be Yo mismo, but if you're female then it's going to be Yo misma.
I can do it myself. Puedo hacerlo yo mismo or Yo misma.
I can't do it today but I can do it tomorrow. No puedo hacerlo hoy pero puedo hacerlo mañana.
The verb to speak or to talk in Spanish is Hablar.
How would you say I can't talk now? No puedo hablar ahora.
Now very commonly we'll say to speak with someone.
On this slide you can see all the different options we have for that.
The word Con means with, and you can see how the first two words get joined up here.
So from the top we have Conmigo, which means with me.
Contigo means with you. Con él or con ella would be with him or with her.
Con nosotros or con nosotras is with us.
We have two options for this. If you're a group of males,
or a mixed group of males and females, then you will use Con nosotros.
However, if you're a group of all females, then you will instead use Con nosotras.
Same goes for this bottom one, which means with them.
We can say Con ellos or Con ellas.
How would you say I can't speak with you today?
No puedo hablar contigo hoy. He can speak with them.
Puede hablar con ellos. Can they speak with me now?
¿Pueden hablar conmigo ahora? We can speak with her later.
Podemos hablar con ella más tarde. I can speak with him myself.
Puedo hablar con él yo mismo. What about this next one?
Can they speak with us tomorrow? Let's imagine that this is a group of all females.
¿Pueden hablar con nosotras mañana?
