The Connor Zary contract situation keeps getting crazier as Calgary Flames General Manager Craig
Conroy has spoken out so we have a massive Flames Free Agency update. For some this update will ease
some nerves, for others it only makes it worse. Either way, Zary will hopefully be a flame.
We're going to get into all that more in this video but first I want to welcome you to Flames
Digest, I'm Mark Griffith. If you're new around here and you love the Flames, make sure you
subscribe so you can stay up to date on all the latest news, updates, reports, and rumors
revolving around your Calgary Flames. We would love to welcome you to the Flames Digest family
and let's talk about the latest on Zary. Now that we've had yet another signing in Martin
Pospisil yesterday, yes Martin Popsicle, Pospi, whatever you want to call him, another signing
has happened but it's another one that isn't what the fans are looking for. They care the most
about Connor Zary and finally as of yesterday we have an update as Craig Conroy was interviewed
and the media is blowing up with what he had to say. So let's start with this tweet out from
Danny Austin because he's kind of the main man here. So he says Connor or sorry Connor,
Connor on Zary, Conroy on Zary negotiations. Here's his quote, he's a huge priority for us
and we're going to get it done it's just a matter of when. I know everybody wants it done tomorrow
and probably he does too and so do we but both sides have to come to an agreement where we both
feel comfortable. So there you go that's kind of you know long story short you know he's still the
priority for the Flames he's the priority for um you know for the rest of the off season and
obviously it's Zary's priority to get a contract as well but it's it's not gonna be done anytime
soon kind of these things take time I guess. So both sides you know they're interested of course
they're negotiating but nothing has come to an agreement yet and Danny Austin here he actually
wrote an entire article on the Calgary Herald so let's dive well further in. So the Calgary Flames
are confident that they'll be able to get a deal done with Connor Zary this summer it's more a
matter of when not if. So hopefully that sentence right there can kind of ease some nerves for the
people who think Zary is going to be gone whether it's you know through a trade or whatever else
could potentially happen here but either way it's more a matter of when not if and yes negotiations
don't always you know creep their way into August but let's just face it he's not the only Connor
in the division that's being talked about with new deals done in August of course we have the better
Connor in the division even in the Battle of Alberta but still hopefully that can ease some
nerves there. Right now though nothing seems especially imminent well there you go there
oh great so it's not that big of a priority if it's not you know if nothing's coming right away
if it's not imminent let's let's continue before we make too harsh of a judgment. So the Flames
have been in back and forth negotiations with the restricted free agent and his representatives for
a couple months now with the reports indicating they prefer to sign the 23-year-old to a shorter
term bridge deal and the player ideally wanting something longer and you know Zary getting that
security of you know getting paid for that long especially for someone who at this point in their
career is a being labeled as injury prone I'm not going to label him that but he has dealt with some
injuries. Now getting Zary signed is the biggest piece actually I'm going to cut in with this
instead another little quote here from Conroy so he said we're talking it's been slow though
in relation of course to Zary so we're talking it's been slow though Flames GM Conroy said
Wednesday shortly after it was announced that Martin Pospisil had been signed to a three-year
extension so even with Pospisil sorry with Pospisil there comes a point where it heats
up and you think now we're close and then you're able to get it done quick. Pospisil was probably
two three months we were talking with his agent Dan Milstein so yes these things do take time and
with Zary it clearly is quite slow but even though it is slow I can go back to this getting Zary
signed is the biggest piece of business the Flames have left to get done before training camp
starts trading Rasmus Andersen or getting Dustin Wolf signed to an early extension might wind up
being bigger if they happen but there's no real immediate urgency on either front yes both of
those things are things that I think most Flames fans want to see happen especially Wolf getting
signed for preferably as long as possible I know the fan base is still a little split on whether
to trade Andersen or not and those rumors are dying down clearly um which maybe that means a
trade's actually coming but either way we know that top of the to-do list is getting Zary signed
so but they need to get a deal done with Zary before training camp and he represents an
interesting dilemma what is this dilemma how could it get even crazier well pick 24th overall in the
has shown flashes of exciting talent remember his goal in game one against Vancouver last year
and has an ability to create while driving full speed on the rush that few other players on the
Flames roster can match from December 1st until January 5th of this past season he put up 10
points in 14 games while only Kadri and Huberto managed more over that stretch with the Flames
so he has the potential he's shown that he can get it done at the NHL level he's shown he can be
a really good player that suggests he has it in him to be an offensive driver over the next few
seasons but on January 7th he suffered a tough knee injury against the Ducks that took him out
of the lineup for six weeks he then had another knee injury on March 27th that ended his season
very unfortunate as we know so both were freak injuries and were not the result of any wrongdoing
on Zary's part but they limited him to 54 games this season and he wound up scoring 13 goals and
adding 14 assists so not terrible stats of course you know it's a point every other game but you'd
expect a little bit better out of you know a guy like Zary and yes obviously injuries play a part
if you're the Flames are you offering a contract based on Zary's considerable potential or based
on what he has accomplished so far in the NHL it's a tough question and one that Flames fans
have been debating on bar stools for months and it is true I think the Flames themselves are
leaning more towards you know we're gonna offer a contract on what has been accomplished so far
what we've seen there have been those flashes there have been those injuries whereas you know
if you offer a contract completely based on considerable potential it might be too expensive
and it can bite you in the butt at the end of the day obviously hockey is a business so we
understand the Flames side but of course we understand Zary's side as well so maybe it's
not a surprise after this whole dilemma that negotiations drag into August it's nothing to
panic about the Flames sure aren't and that's being written obviously based off of what Conroy
said but it it still is it's it's a situation I guess is what we can call it what's going on with
the Connors Zary contract situation it's going slow I think it's going to continue to go slow
based off of all of this but at least Conroy has spoken out about it and is 100% honest with us
he's not saying oh yeah don't worry we'll sign them tomorrow it's it's going to take time but
a deal will be agreed upon within the summer you would hope now I do have a couple updates I mean
one of them kind of just goes exactly with what we were talking about but Conroy was on I want to
say it was Sportsnet talking to Logan Gordon so Logan Gordon had this to say he said working with
Honzyk again this summer and raved about Honzyk's progress this offseason so a lot of people have
been wondering what about Sammy Honzyk we never talk about him anymore well apparently the progress
he's made this offseason has been great let's talk about the Perek injury so it was a nagging
injury from the end of last season so the team is just being cautious so that makes it almost
sound like it was the flames this season to pull him out of the World Junior Summer Showcase
either way I don't think anyone's too upset about it I don't think Zane is all that upset about it
either last thing of course that we just talked about so talks with Zary Camp have been slow but
a deal will get done Zary was recently at Winsport training with teammates so if he was training at
obviously he's going to continue to be a flame why else would you be in Calgary for one and also
obviously over at Winsport playing some PAC in July so great to see some wonderful updates there
now let's get into the comment of the day as we love to do here on the channel to wrap things up
comes from yesterday's video of course and this was a good comment here from Wheel of Time so
it's obviously about the Pospisil sign and I should have prefaced by saying that but let's
if he can improve on his goal scoring and discipline this is a great contract if he
stays the same it's not bad money for a fourth liner in a rising cap so either way the deal
was honestly a good deal what from the business standpoint no matter what and it could end up of
course looking like a great deal if Pospisil can really get that offensive production going
and obviously with that discipline they're not taking stupid penalties or even worse than that
suspensions and whatnot so wonderful comment there thank you so much for watching this video
please subscribe what you saw here today and have a wonderful rest every day
