Ukraine continues to view Crimea as one of the key objectives of its strategy and intends to increase pressure on the occupied peninsula. El País writes about this. According to the newspaper, Kyiv is seeking to disrupt Russian troop logistics by targeting transport and military infrastructure. The article notes that attacks on bridges, railway lines, roads, and supply facilities are intended to complicate the supply of Russian forces on the peninsula.
Ukrainian historian and analyst Oleksiy Otkyadach stated that Ukraine has not abandoned the idea of returning Crimea. He argued that current actions should demonstrate to both the peninsula's residents and the Russian side that Kyiv continues to consider Crimea its territory and intends to seek its return.
The publication also cites the opinion of representatives of the Crimean Tatar community, who believe that the latest series of strikes is part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening Russia's military and psychological potential in the region. They estimate that one of the goals may be to further disrupt transport links with the peninsula, including the Kerch Bridge.
The publication emphasizes that maintaining Crimea is increasingly demanding Moscow's resources. The authors note that defending the peninsula is becoming increasingly costly from an economic, military, and logistical standpoint, especially given the need to simultaneously support operations in other areas.
Furthermore, the article states that the demographic situation in Crimea has changed over the years of occupation due to the resettlement of a large number of Russian citizens. According to the publication's sources, the intensification of attacks creates additional uncertainty for residents of the peninsula and complicates the situation for the Russian authorities.
Temporarily occupied Crimea was supposed to be Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s crowning achievement and an internal symbol of his imperial ambitions, but has since turned from a strategic asset into a military and personal liability, Politico reported. The outlet stated that Ukraine has established air control over routes into the Russian-occupied peninsula, targeting logistics, and looking to isolate and weaken Russia’s forces in the south.
Today, Crimea’s population is living with cuts to power and water, with no deliveries and with no fuel. Cell service vanishes amid frequent blackouts, public transit has practically disappeared, and fuel sales to private individuals and businesses are banned. Prices have shot up and the tourist season, upon which many depend, has been disrupted. For many, getting out of Crimea has also become near-impossible. Ukrainian drones have destroyed bridges and now patrol the land route through occupied southern Ukraine to Russia. Most trains no longer run.
Politico noted that many Ukrainians believe the war will end in the peninsula.
Since its occupation, Moscow has turned Crimea into a military base that allowed its forces to rapidly occupy swathes of southern Ukraine. The peninsula became a safe rear, supplying Russia’s southern front, all while the peninsula’s residents remained relatively sheltered from the ongoing war. The outlet reported that the situation has changed dramatically in the summer of 2026. Thanks to Ukraine’s current advantage in mid-range strike drones, it is in a position to degrade and perhaps even destroy some of Russia’s military capabilities in the country’s south by disrupting the logistics that keep its army functioning. Ukraine hopes this will force Russia to redirect its forces from elsewhere on the front, easing pressure on the Ukrainian army, as well as Russia’s attacks on towns and cities. Politico emphasized that Crimea has huge personal significance for Putin. The loss of the peninsula would strike a blow to his reputation inside Russia, and could stoke dissatisfaction with his leadership and the war.
The outlet quoted former deputy head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate Illya Pavlenko as saying: “Crimea is the golden key to Russia’s imperial ambitions.”
