Tornado hits Texas during rush hour

This is a tornado. Tonight, a terrifying scene as a tornado slams San Antonio. Oh, no. Power flashes lighting up the sky. Drivers frantic as it touches down near a packed highway. Oh, my God. At the height of the morning commute, part of the roof of this apartment complex peeled right off families, living rooms and bedrooms now exposed to the sky. Something flew over. I'm like, Whoa, the building started shaking everything. The storm's torrential rain paralyzing a massive expanse of south and central Texas, triggering multiple flash flood emergencies. This truck spotted floating down a flooded road in Bernie. NBC's San Antonio affiliate capturing this upsetting moments. A group of deer appeared to be carried away by the rushing waters. We have deer struggling in the water. Highways like this outside Uvalde have been overwhelmed by the rushing waters, leaving some communities trapped behind the floodwaters. The only way to access them is by the air, where DPS has been rescuing people in helicopters neighborhoods evacuating in Uvalde as the Leona River swells onto city streets. What do you think when you look out of this flooding? What you see here is it's basically a disaster. You know, it's an area where you cannot come through. As you can see behind us, how this water is very dangerous right now. We caught up with residents like Blanca San Miguel as the waters closed in on their home because of the storm. They told us that there was getting dangerous and they were getting probably 20 ft or 30 ft from here. An anxious night ahead as yet more rain is expected in the region and that water could rise so fast. Ryan Chandler joins us live now from Uvalde and Ryan, I know you're talking to families out there. They have a real concern about a dam breaking and Tom, we have heard from so many people across this community, very concerned about whether the dam up river could break. They'll be grateful to hear though that DPS tells me just in the last few minutes, water is coming over the top of that dam, but there is no indication that it will break tonight. Tom, we thank you for watching and remember, stay updated on breaking news and top stories on the NBC News app or watch live on our Youtube channel.
