In 1939, French archaeologist Pierre Montet unearthed intact tombs of pharaohs like Sheshonq II and Psousennès I, filled with golden masks, treasures, and perfectly preserved mummies. For some, this was an even greater find than Tutankhamun. Yet the outbreak of WWII consigned Tanis to obscurity.

Today, the vast 200-hectare site, three times the size of Pompeii, is being re-explored by French archaeologists led by François Leclère, using cutting-edge technology like magnetometers and 3D mapping to rediscover the lost city of the last pharaohs.
