This is the most exciting team in hockey, as Montreal once again induces an absolute classic game, stealing a point from the Philadelphia Flyers after being down 3-0 early.
Ivan Dmitrov puts on a show, Lane Hudson up to point per game, Kirby Dock getting back on the score sheet with two goals, Nick Suzuki extending his point streak, Samuel Montemo having a bounce back.
Yes, it was a loss, but there was so much good from this game.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that the Montreal Canadiens are the most exciting team in hockey.
And the number one team, even though we were there before, officially now, sole possession, 19 points, no one else has more than 18, top of the Eastern Conference.
Yes, this is just the Atlantic Division, but it is number one in the East.
So, look, I know it was a loss, Jesse, but there was so much going on here for the Cardiac Canadiens.
Again, I think the most exciting team in the NHL right now.
You really have to feel that way, Josh, just because the ability for this team to come back in games is absolutely nuts.
You just kind of expect, even though we were down early, that was rough, kind of obviously early goal, followed by a 5-on-3, we're down 3-0 very early in this game.
Everybody had the feeling that the Habs could really come back.
In fact, they've shown us time and time again how they can do that, Josh.
But Demidov was such a big part of really getting us back in here.
Unfortunately, Nick Suzuki couldn't tuck it away, though, Josh.
We wanted those two points, we're getting used to getting those two points so close to just tucking it away there at the end.
He almost always gets that, but that's going to be the brakes a little bit.
Obviously, the Habs are going to want to handle this in the future.
Just having two shots in that first period isn't definitely that winning formula, so they're going to want to improve on that.
But positive notes is normally they don't have the strongest second periods, and that's where we really shone.
We were able to get those three goals there.
Demidov bringing us into the play, and when we're just having a power play like we're having right now, producing at the clip,
basically a 50% clip since Demidov has been on there.
Nick Suzuki tying Pierre Turgeon for that 12-game point streak, which is absolutely unreal.
Caulfield, we know what he's doing in overtime with that goal record there.
There's no doubt, Josh, that even when we're not having our best effort tonight,
that the Habs are still going to find a way to make it a game and collect those all-important points here.
Yeah, absolutely.
You're down 3-0.
Stealing the points is incredible, and there were so many good things.
I'll just start with Suzuki.
I wouldn't even say it was a quiet night, but even his goal got overshadowed by Demidov's pass.
Wasn't that just ridiculous?
The deception's insane.
Every single Flyers and Habs player, probably, minus Nick Suzuki, thought he was shooting it.
But, no, that's not what happened.
And, you know, Nick Suzuki now up to 19 points.
But the impressive thing, too, 17 wins, 6 losses on the dot tonight.
And, again, the Flyers have some good face-off guys.
They have Christian Dvorak.
They have Sean Couturier, guys who are good on the dot.
But Suzuki was winning a lot.
So was Jake Evans.
Even Oliver Kapanen won his fair share of draws.
Kirby Doff, three wins, four losses.
Pretty good.
So Suzuki extending that point streak was incredible.
But Lane Hudson, as well, being up there now officially at a point-per-game.
Jesse, we have three point-per-game players on this team.
Hudson led the team in game score.
I mean, and that goal that Deke, to set up Kirby Doff's goal, that's to meet up.
So this one here, the little shoulder shake.
Even the Flyers announcers were in awe at that play by the lane train.
I mean, I feel like he's the easy guy that we can focus on and just say, oh, yeah, I mean, like, he's been great.
But there's been so many other good performances.
I feel like somehow, even, after this game, I keep thinking of our top line.
I keep thinking of to meet up.
I keep thinking of Monty bouncing back.
But, really, Lane Hudson, not even quietly, because he was insane, still picking up two points.
And just, this guy might legit have, like, an 85-point season.
It's those guys that just want it so bad.
Like, Hudson, like, Demidov was really shining through tonight.
Like, Hudson with that shake and bake, again, to create those separations, to set up goals like we're seeing time and time again.
But, again, shout-out to Nick.
We need to say this one more time.
19 points in 13 games.
Like, this is a hell of a clip.
Like, with Darth Armstrong here, like, who's going to be the GM for Team Canada coming here, the Olympics in attendance.
Like, this is a heck of a showing here for when it really matters.
So, again, like, this matters.
But, Demidov, we're obviously, like, seeing him come into his own.
We're really, even though Nick Suzuki, Hudson playing great, like, it was really Demidov that was even, like, the star the most in that second period.
But, like, it was even the combination, like, we can't forget Caulfield.
It's really, like, how Caulfield and then Nick Suzuki and Demidov, how they all work together, especially on that power play, which is absolutely unreal.
But, you know, we know the top line.
We know what they do, Josh.
But we have to give a shout out to Kirby Doc, you know, having two goals in this game.
And, like, he's been playing well lately, not getting rewarded all the way.
But you have to feel like if you just keep playing the game the right way that the results would come.
So, so amazing to see that coming as well tonight for the boy Kirby.
Yeah, absolutely.
And, look, a big thing there, and I want to point this out, like we mentioned yesterday, they changed up the lines a bit, right?
And they went back to the Kirby Doc, Zack Bolduc, Brendan Gallagher line, which prior to tonight was actually the Habs' highest expected goals percentage line of any of their lines.
Again, the stats are from before tonight, 68.8%, which is by far and away number one.
And tonight you look at the game score and you see Brendan Gallagher there at third, Kirby Doc at fourth, and Zack Bolduc at sixth.
Those guys are all right around the top.
Yeah, Suzuki was there, Hudson's there, you see Caulfield there.
But then it's Doc, it's Gallagher, and it's Bolduc up there as well.
And so I think that really paid dividends for Kirby and no, Gallagher and, you know, Gallagher did get an assist, Bolduc didn't, but that line was really a force.
And Bolduc only played like 13 minutes, Gallagher only played 12, Kirby Doc played over 13, a bit of power play time.
And, Jesse, I wanted to say with him, doesn't it feel like he's finally getting his legs back, like quicker this season?
Like last year it took him until that break where we went to Florida and he really started to pick it up.
I feel like he's got it now.
He's driving to the net a little harder.
He's a lot more confident on his skate edges.
Like, I'm actually really excited to see if Kirby can start to drive a line again coming up here soon, because he's done nothing but improve since the start of this season.
Had some high aspirations, but we know that Kirby Doc definitely has the skill to drive a line.
And especially considering that he's been putting in that work in that off-season to really be able to fly out there.
Like, we really know that Kirby can do so again, you know, putting in that work in the gym, you know, for that strength and that conditioning gear is obviously paying dividends.
So, it was really big, you know, to see him getting some early season success here, which now he's starting to do.
He's starting to build upon it.
And, again, like that depth of just getting that scoring outside that top line is so important.
Because, like, we know what Nick Suzuki, Cole Caulfield, now kind of Yvonne Debrow, we're starting to put him in that conversation.
Like, again, looking like a point per game kind of guy like himself very shortly.
But, I mean, speaking of points, like in short periods of time, we also need to shout out Lane Hudson,
who has gotten more points in 100 games than Kale McCart, which is amazing to say.
In his first 100 games, he was able to get more points.
So, again, amazing what he's able to do.
I think not even getting, like, enough love sometimes.
Like, I know Kale McCart's amazing and he's really good, but we need to start giving that respect to, like, to Lane Hudson.
Like, you know, it's not like he's, like, Kale McCart's impeachable.
Like, nobody can kind of touch him as the best, you know, offensive.
And, you know, I know, obviously, he brings a solid defensive game.
But, like, I think what, you know, Lane Hudson doing as well, the stats are backing up.
Like, he's projected, he could end up being, there is a world, it's a crazy take, but, like, the numbers are backing up.
He could be better than Kale McCart once he starts in that same amount of time.
Yeah, it's, like, it's not completely impossible.
And, look, Kale McCart is so ridiculous.
Like, I think he'll have a heart trophy in his career for sure.
I mean, what, he have 30 goals last year as a defenseman too?
Like, you know, if Hudson wants to get to that mark, sure, he'll need to work too.
But, you know, the fact that even today, right, we're looking at the defenseman point totals.
It's, like, Kale McCart, and then it's Lane Hudson.
Hudson's 21.
Like, McCart is still young, but been in the league a good amount longer.
And he's bigger, right?
And it's just, like, yeah, there's so much, so many impressive aspects to Hudson's game while he's still developing his defensive game.
And, yeah, the young guys are just so incredible to watch.
I mean, I'd like to watch this, Demetavik, one more time.
Shooting in between strides, like, what an insane rip that is.
Like, I just want to highlight that again.
Solid point.
Yeah, and Hudson making that play.
Demetavik there with that deception on Nick Suzuki's shot.
So many good things.
But one of the final things I wanted to mention here is Samuel Montembeau as well.
You know, the numbers are not, like, the craziest here for this game.
But 42 shots against, 38 saves, 906 save percentage.
After letting in 3 goals on 5 shots to open the game, Jesse, he stopped 31 straight.
And, yeah, in the shootout, he let in that Zegers goal.
But, like, who's not letting in a goal against Trevor Zegers?
That just is what it is, unfortunately.
The guy is, I think, has the highest percentage, like, ever, or one of them, ever in the shootout.
Like, 65%.
But Samuel Montembeau, I thought this was a good bounce back for him.
And even though he didn't get the win tonight, and he is still the only Habs goalie to register a loss,
which is still nuts to say.
I think that run, especially from those first 5 shots until the third period when Grabenkin scored off,
I think, a deflected shot.
Monty, I think, is going to get his shot again soon.
Probably not against the Devils.
But I think this will do worlds for his confidence.
And I was impressed by what I saw for a few periods tonight, for sure.
And this was important.
Again, the Habs and Monty can build off this going forward.
But, like, we know it was a rollercoaster, right?
Like, we heard it in that first period that some of the Bluebirds were kind of coming out there a little bit.
By the end of that third period, they're chanting his name, right?
So, again, he really battled.
He stayed in the pocket.
Again, you know, to help get the Habs a point here tonight.
So, obviously, really important for him here early on in the season.
Because we're hoping that, you know, obviously, he can get back into his rhythm.
And we're seeing a lot of signs of that tonight, Josh.
Like, I feel like he's going to get back there.
Tonight's a big step in that direction.
Absolutely.
And, look, we do have a guy on deck who's probably going to get a start soon.
But at the end of the day, we have the Habs.
Top of the Eastern Conference, 9-3-1.
What else could you ask for through the first 13 games of this season?
Now, maybe some less overtime games.
My goodness gracious, 6 out of the 13?
Like, again, it's insane right now what we're seeing from this team.
But it's exciting that no matter how much they're down or even up,
we know this game is going to end up being close.
And at the end of the day, it's an exciting team to watch play hockey.
And that's why we're all here talking about this at the end.
The best team in the East.
I can't stop saying it.
It's incredible.
