For the first time, Ukrainian military personnel carried out a unique operation to land a ground-based robotic complex or GRC on the occupied Kinburn Spit .

The 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced this on social media. It noted that this is the first known combat mission of this format in the world. "This is not just a technical experiment. It is a new approach to warfare, in which the risk to humans is assumed by the machine. This is the result of the commander's vision, systematic training, the courage of the crews, and the belief that the Ukrainian army is capable of not only catching up with technology but also creating new rules on the battlefield," the brigade emphasized.

The brigade showed a video showing a platform with a nuclear missile system floating toward the shore of a spit, and then a robotic complex driving onto the shore and firing at an enemy target.

As reported, since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainian ground robotic systems have completed more than 66,300 logistics and evacuation missions. According to the Ministry of Defense, in June alone their number reached 16,676, which is 122% more than in January. The Brave1 defense cluster has announced a grant competition for the development of domestic bipedal humanoid robots designed exclusively for military applications. Amid the rapid development of civilian humanoid robots worldwide, Ukraine has become the first country to begin funding combat humanoid systems as a separate category of defense procurement, rather than as an adaptation of commercial developments.

The Kinburn Spit is a narrow sandy peninsula in southern Ukraine, located between the Dnipro-Buh Estuary and the Black Sea. The area is part of Mykolaiv Oblast and has been contested during Russia's full-scale invasion.

Russian troops entered the 40-kilometer-long Kinburn Spit in March 2022 from the then-occupied part of Kherson Oblast.

The spit remains strategically important due to its location, as control of the area has enabled Russian forces to influence access to parts of the Black Sea. Shipping routes from the ports of Kherson and Mykolaiv converge nearby. Ukrainian troops raised the national flag on the Kinburn Spit as Russian forces withdrew from their positions in the area, Ukraine's Southern Defense Forces said on June 25.

The use of drones for this amphibious assault is a significant development in the use of uncrewed systems in the war. Ukraine has used naval drones to target Russian Black Sea Fleet ships and uncrewed ground vehicles for front-line missions that are too deadly for human soldiers. Now, it's merging the two, as it has with naval drones and first-person-view drones, among other uncrewed systems.

Ground robots, or uncrewed ground vehicles, are fast becoming the face of Ukrainian battlefield logistics and missions. As mines, artillery, and drone-saturated skies threaten troops, Ukraine has focused on building more drone vehicles that can be remotely operated to transport ammunition and supplies, evacuate wounded troops, lay mines, launch other drones, or attack.
