The interview features the leadership of Big Machine Rock (BMR) discussing their mission to resurrect rock and roll. They explain their investment strategy, focusing on high-quality visual content and self-starting artists, while emphasizing the importance of the Sunset Strip's musical legacy and the need for authentic, soul-driven band performances over computer-generated music.
How are you guys doing tonight?
Good.
How are you doing?
I'm doing excellent.
We've got a big, big show lined up tonight.
You guys excited?
Really.
Super excited.
I love that.
So you bought Big Machine Rock at a time when many labels are cutting budgets.
What did you see in rock music that the rest of the industry was missing?
We just have a passion for rock and everything we're seeing is indicating rock's coming
back.
We believe in sunset.
We believe in rock and roll and we believe we're going to resurrect it here.
I love that.
Now, do you guys have a favorite band that you rock with?
We grew up with Van Halen, The Doors, your classic rock bands.
Right.
We're hearing a lot of great new stuff coming out, so there's a lot of hope that rock is
here to stay now.
It is.
I think the kids need something and I think rock and roll is going to come back big time
now.
And this is the place to do it at the Whiskey.
You can't get more rock and roll than this.
This is the house.
Right, right, right.
So I actually heard a story that Motley Crue, they used to live just right up the street
and they would come here and bring their demos to the door lady to be able to play.
And they had the best parties up the street.
Right.
And it was just right up the street and just right over there was where Motley Crue was
invented or whatever.
Well, like you're saying, the history is here.
From The Doors to Van Halen to Guns N' Roses, everybody's played, or all the great ones
played here.
Yes, absolutely.
There's great vibes here.
You guys are the principal of Siebert Financial who is sponsoring this show.
What do you think is the most important thing that young artists need to know about financial
literacy?
Whatever amount of money you have, it's very important you have a plan.
You have to have a plan on how to invest in what you want to do with your money.
Right, right.
And a budget.
Yeah, and a budget.
Get yourself on a budget.
Okay, now about the label, with BMR, are you guys announcing any new partnerships or deals
tonight?
Not tonight, but we're right now in the process of probably signing three or four new acts.
Some are very established, so in the upcoming year, we're going to have some great announcements.
Wow, wow, I love that.
You're putting real money behind cinematic music videos when other labels are kind of
scaling back.
How do you know that that investment is paying off?
Because I think the world is visual.
It was visual when we were kids.
I think it's visual now and all the kids love their own YouTubes and they love their social
media.
And I think these little snippets from music videos are very important to reach the population.
So you got to make sure it's quality product.
And here's the other thing, it gets the artist excited.
It's actually a secret weapon of ours to get people signing.
They all want to make music videos for their own content.
And we're already seeing the videos of pushing people to stream the music, and that's the
key.
100%.
So Olive Vox, Ryan Perds, and Wes Parker are all very different artists.
What do you personally see in each of them that convinced you that they could become
big major artists?
I think we see their talent and I think we collectively like that they're hard workers
and they're doing a lot.
They're self-starters.
I think that's the key.
The label will do as much as we can, but they also have to go out and do their own
thing too.
Getting tours, getting the music out there, getting on their socials, all the stuff that
makes a band.
Some of the things David and I notice is the passion that all these groups have, the hours
they put in.
You have to eat, sleep, and drink it.
And I really think the groups we have, they're doing that.
And I think that's what creates success.
And how do you pick, you know, there's so many bands out there and there's so many people
that want to be successful.
How do you pick?
I think it's a gut feeling.
I really do.
I think you've got to go, you know what, I'm buying into what this artist is trying to
say.
And we have a really good A&R person out there that's on the front line who has a very successful
band.
So he's sending us a lot of people that are getting good buzz in clubs, getting good buzz
on their videos, and good buzz on their socials.
So are you guys looking for more artists, would you say?
Are you pretty stocked right now?
We're always looking for talent, but we don't want to get too much talent.
We want to make sure the people we have, that we take care of.
You focus on them, the quality, not quantity.
Yeah, you've got to focus.
I love that.
Do you guys, are y'all going to bars and kind of watching new acts that don't know that
you're there?
We're out there all the time going to live shows.
We're out there on socials.
Any way we can get people, refer people to us.
We have a lot of young people that work with the company.
So we're getting a lot of referrals from a lot of young people who have their ears to
the street.
Okay, okay.
And then we're getting bands approaching us that are actually established because they
like everything we're doing that their other labels might not be doing.
Okay, okay.
Let's take this for an event, for example, right?
Nobody else is doing that.
We're literally renting the whiskey out and putting four great acts on to get them attention.
It's going to be a good night tonight.
It's going to be a great night.
A great night.
Out of all your acts, is there any one song that you like the best or that's your favorite?
Honestly, they're all our acts.
That's what you're in the mood for.
Okay, okay.
A little bit more.
That's the answer.
Okay, I love that.
I love that.
Well, thank you guys so much for your time.
We can't wait to see the show tonight.
Thank you guys for putting this together and putting all this great music out.
That's what we need.
You know, a lot of stuff for a while, it got really kind of computer generated of people
just making music on a computer that has no real soul to it.
It's just a machine making music and we need bands.
We need to make the Sunset Strip great.
I didn't see it, but I've heard rumors that the drummer from Led Zeppelin, John Bonham,
used to drag race on the Sunset Strip.
I've heard crazy stories.
I've never seen any of it myself, but we need those Motley Crue times back.
They're coming.
Well, thank you guys so much for putting this together.
You guys are great.
Have a great night.
Thank you so much, gentlemen.
Thank you.
