In this lesson, we're going to talk about possessives,
so things that belong to you, to me and to others.
We do this by using these little words,
my, your, his, her, our and their.
These are specific pronouns we use when talking about ownership.
We've already used three of these, but actually it's only two words in Spanish.
For my, we have me.
Then to say his or her is expressed with the same word, su.
Now, the pronoun that we have for your is tu.
Let's take a book as an example.
So in Spanish, we could say mi libro, tu libro and su libro.
Now, this word here, su, will actually cover one more angle.
You can also use it for their.
So, su libro could mean his book, her book or their book.
All of that is contained with su.
Let's go for it.
How do you say my book?
Mi libro, your book, tu libro, his book, su libro, her book, su libro, their book.
Again, it's su libro.
This last one is quite powerful because it can be used for his, her and their.
And it can even be used as the formal way of saying your.
So all of that is packed into this one possessive pronoun, su.
Now, moving into the topic of plurals, let's return to our original slide.
And now let's say that we are referring to books, libros.
So we'll add an s onto the word to make it plural.
Now, what also happens is that we add an s to the possessive pronoun to keep everything matching.
So we have mis libros, tus libros and sus libros.
My books, your books and this last one will stand for his books, her books or their books.
Let's work with another noun.
How would you say my house?
Mi casa, his house, su casa, your house, tu casa, their house, su casa.
What would it be in the plural?
My houses, mis casas, her houses, sus casas, your houses, tus casas, their houses, sus casas.
We have just one missing angle which is of course our.
The word for this in Spanish is nuestro.
Now, you need to be a little bit more careful with this one
because we actually have four options in total.
We could have nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras.
Which one you use will depend on the noun.
So we'd go with nuestro for a masculine noun, nuestra for a feminine noun,
nuestros for a masculine plural and nuestras for a feminine plural.
Let's try this out.
How would you say our book?
Nuestro libro, our books, nuestros libros, our house, nuestra casa.
Our houses, nuestras casas.
To say idea in Spanish it's just a change of pronunciation.
Idea, this is feminine so la idea.
How do you say my idea?
Mi idea.
What about our ideas?
Nuestras ideas.
Keep in mind that the choice whether to go with nuestro or nuestra
with this possessive pronoun has nothing to do with whether the one speaking is male or female.
It all depends on the noun or plural that follows.
So since ideas is a feminine word and is plural we match that with nuestras, our ideas.
Nuestras ideas.
Let's run a short drill using these five words.
Book, house, idea, car and drink.
Translating these into Spanish we have libro, casa, idea, coche and bebida.
So I've introduced two new words here.
Car which is coche and bebida which is drink.
How would you say his drink?
Su bebida.
My drink.
Mi bebida.
Our ideas.
Nuestras ideas.
Your house.
Tu casa.
Her book.
Su libro.
Their drinks.
Sus bebidas.
My car.
Mi coche.
Our car.
Nuestro coche.
Her ideas.
Sus ideas.
Your drink.
Tu bebida.
My book.
Mi libro.
Her houses.
Sus casas.
Your idea.
Tu idea.
Their books.
Sus libros.
His drink.
Su bebida.
Your cars.
Tus coches.
My idea.
Mi idea.
Our drinks.
Nuestras bebidas.
