An actress reflects on her diverse career, reacting to clips from her various roles. She discusses the emotional challenges of playing characters like Cassie in *Euphoria* and Eden in *The Handmaid's Tale*, the joy of filming *The White Lotus* in Hawaii, and her growth from a child actor in local zombie films to a producer on projects like *Immaculate*.
My apple pie is here.
I have a cart of apple pie and ice cream being delivered right now.
I'm ready.
Oh, I've never ever been happier.
I mean, okay, we're starting really easy.
This is Cassie from Euphoria.
I have never been happier.
This is the first day filming season two.
We did the scene and I was really nervous because it'd been years
and it was probably one of the most memorable moments.
It's so fun playing characters that are drastically different from yourself
and being able to kind of go to places that
not only challenge you but excite you as an actor as well.
I have a lot of empathy for Cassie because I have to as like a performer of her,
but she definitely has very morally questionable choices.
Yeah, maybe grandpa was a power bottom.
Does that make you feel better?
This is Olivia from White Lotus.
Maybe grandpa was a power bottom.
Does that make you feel better?
Okay, I'm gonna tell a little terrible secret.
I haven't seen the next seasons of White Lotus.
I have a thing where I just, I don't watch stuff that often.
Like I was a huge fan of Handmaid's Tale, like biggest fan.
My mom and I binged it and then the moment I was on it, I haven't seen it since.
I don't know why.
I do remember this line because it was just one of the funniest lines I'd ever read in a script before.
Being on set of White Lotus is, I mean it was such a treat.
Like we were filming in a beautiful, beautiful area.
We were in Hawaii, on Maui, at the Four Seasons, the whole place to ourselves.
I felt like I was in a tropical version of a very fancy, luxurious camp.
Made like lifelong friends on that set.
All right, no seriously, get your hands off my man.
This isn't even a movie, this is an iconic song.
Um, Miss Possessive.
No seriously, get your hands off my man.
This was probably one of the coolest things.
Glenn texted me in a group chat with Tate and was like, I gotta connect you two.
Tate wants to meet and then I talked to her and she was like, would you be down to do this?
I was like, hell yeah, I'm the biggest fan.
Like you're absolutely iconic and I love you.
So this was a pretty, pretty cool moment for me.
I was filming Housemaid at the time and I was in my trailer and I was just doing a bunch
of recordings and I would text Miss Tate and then she'd give me notes and send her more.
I didn't really know where they'd place it and I was like, oh gosh, oh geez.
It was so cool though.
My apple pie's here.
My apple pie.
Wait, you're the paramedic, you saved my stepmother when you were super awkward about it.
Wait, you're the paramedic, you saved my stepmother.
Then you were super awkward.
Okay, who had a stepmother?
I have a cart of apple pie and ice cream being delivered right now.
Literally, it's being delivered right now.
Okay, wait, wait, wait.
Madam Web.
Wait, you're the paramedic, you saved my stepmother.
Then you were super awkward about it.
I had a good time.
I thought it was really funny.
The experience and the relationships that I built with everybody at Sony on Madam Web
definitely correlated over into Anyone But You
and now I have a really great working relationship there.
Your appearance tells the world who you are and what you want.
Speaking for myself, the goal is boners.
Emmaline, everything sucks.
Oh my gosh.
Your appearance tells the world who you are and what you want.
Speaking for myself, the goal is boners.
I was nothing like Emmaline in high school.
Emmaline has way more confidence and she was outgoing and she's a theater kid.
I was very quiet and just focused on school.
Yeah, I was a rule follower for sure.
Emmaline was one of the first characters that I think will forever be in my heart.
It was the first time I'd ever had like a big role on anything.
I got to film it in Oregon, so I was really close to where I grew up.
On the weekends, I would drive home and see my family.
It was just me and my dog, Tank.
It was so great.
I loved it.
Titanic me.
Anyone But You.
Titanic me.
Glenn and I kind of created that moment in the moment.
It was really funny.
I'm obsessed with Titanic and Will, our director also,
is just really good at embracing everything that Glenn and I
would want to bring into the script
and letting us play around with the lines.
We just felt so free and fun.
This was a really fun moment.
When I'm involved as a producer on projects,
I think that, for me at least, the environment, I feel more immersed in it.
I know everybody.
I have a deeper connection and relationship to people.
I just want to make sure everybody's having a really good time.
I try to create activities for everybody.
I love when people feel like a family when they're working together.
I didn't have a desk yet, so I took it with me and passed through security and went to Starbucks.
What?
I didn't have a desk yet, so I took it with me and passed through security and went to Starbucks.
Who?
I don't remember this at all.
Are you sure I said this?
Who said this?
Oh, reality!
I didn't have a desk yet, so I took it with me and passed through security and went to
I had to memorize so many lines for reality.
I think that my brain doesn't remember a single thing that I said.
That movie was so intense because it was the actual transcript from the interrogation,
and so we had everything precisely the same.
We did the whole movie in 16 days,
and we were filming like 10, 15 pages of just pure dialogue every single day.
I'm trying to narrow down the different projects.
He won't touch me.
I'm ugly.
What?
He won't touch me.
I'm ugly.
Who said this?
I kind of remember how I said it.
I just don't remember who said it.
He won't touch me.
I'm ugly.
Oh, oh, Handmaid's Tale!
He won't touch me.
I'm ugly.
On set of Handmaid's Tale, it was like they were playing Taylor Swift all the time.
We were singing, dancing.
It was such a good vibe, and I remember being like, oh, this, like, this is how sets should be.
Like, this is just so much fun.
Everybody's friends.
The crew's incredible.
It was a really good environment.
Eden was such a beautiful, tragic character.
She just was so unaware of the world and was raised in such a bubble,
so she didn't actually understand a lot of the things going on around her.
My agent sent me the audition, and I went in, and I had an audition,
and then a callback, and another callback,
and my mom would take me every single time.
She'd drive me, and I'd sit in the car, and I'd be so nervous to go in,
but I remember just having this feeling.
I was like, I can just know Eden.
Like, I loved her on a different kind of level as an actor,
and I was like, no one else could do this.
Wait, so you don't even believe in God?
Immaculate.
I don't actually remember specifically this line,
but God's involved, so it's for sure immaculate.
Wait, so you don't even believe in God?
Immaculate was such a treat because it was a script that I had from when I was younger,
and so being able to be a part of hiring the entire team,
the director, the cast, bringing on financiers, producers,
and then rewriting the script and going location scouting
and being a part of budgeting, like everything.
It was, I loved it.
Being able to bring my grandma through and getting to show them the world
and then show them what I do, it was so special,
and they were in the giant chapel scene,
so they saw all the beautiful nuns and the church,
and it was me dressed as Mother Mary,
and they're like, wow, this is so beautiful,
and I didn't actually tell them what happens,
so my grandie watched it,
and she had very strong words for me as a Catholic.
We are officially being creepy weirdos.
Oh, goodness.
We're officially being creepy.
I don't remember this at all.
Oh, Voyeurs, yes.
We are officially being creepy weirdos.
So a fun little story behind Voyeurs is
the writer-director of Everything Sucks
was the writer-director of Voyeurs,
so I had a couple of the crew members from that project carry on over,
and then I brought them on to Immaculate,
and it was like being able to do different projects
at different stages of my life and my career,
and it was always like little happy reunions.
I remember when I first read it,
I was not expecting the twist ending.
I think Mike does such a good job at having an audience down one road
and then completely spinning them on their heels
and taking them down another.
I thought the movie would end at one point,
and then I was like, there's 20 more pages?
What else is gonna happen?
Mommy ate Daddy.
Mommy ate Daddy?
What the hell?
Wait a second.
Okay, hold on.
We're saying Mommy ate Daddy means I'm young,
right?
I'm pretty young.
Okay, so this is like, this is pre-18.
Oh, man.
I have a lot of questionable choices pre-18 project-wise.
Um, Zombies of Mass Destruction.
Hell yeah.
Mommy ate Daddy.
I remember being on that set,
and I think I was like 10, 10 or 11.
It was a local movie up in our small town,
and they had like open casting for it,
and my mom found out and went and auditioned,
and then I was turned into a zombie.
It was pretty cool.
I've never seen the movie.
I wasn't allowed to see it.
I don't think I've ever even read the script.
I don't think anyone actually needs to see the movie,
but it was the first experience I had on a set,
and I loved it.
I knew from, I mean, I think I got three,
but I don't think I knew actually what it was.
I just wanted to play characters.
I had all these imaginary friends and these worlds,
and I put on little performances from my parents,
and I knew that I just wanted to constantly play different characters.
