I'm watching your show, and you guys are so much more fun than anything I've ever seen locally.
Oh, I love that!
It was our show.
Well, I told her.
Listen, we love having fun. We love each other. We love you guys.
I mean, this is all amazing. Thank you all so very much.
I mean, multiple generations. You actually had a youngster who was on a Zip Trip years ago that came back.
All that good stuff. We love Marissa.
We love her special guests. We love all the waves.
...Junior, who's a fan of DJ Rattlesnake.
DJ Rattlesnake is crushing it with those shoes.
The whole outfit was crazy.
And this is a first for you, debuting here in D.C.
Yes, my first time in D.C.
We're going to get into that and so much more.
Listen, keep it locked to the Marissa Mitchell Show.
Oh, yeah.
We are setting off your weekend right here on the Marissa Mitchell Show.
By now, you know we leave nothing in the tank.
So get ready for comedy, a cookout, and a music trio that I assure you will leave you wanting more.
Up first, he's from a Hollywood family dynasty.
Actor and comedian Damon Wayans Jr. is live in the house to talk all about his shows at the D.C. Comedy Office.
And I cannot wait to get him on that and being a part of entertainment royalty.
And it's a cookout, but it goes all night long.
We're in the kitchen with a preview of this year's DMV and Beyond Overnight Cookout.
We're going to also put together a little game for them on cookout do's and don'ts.
Somebody's going to tell on themselves today.
Plus this.
They're musicians and viral superstars.
The young men behind the Virginia Strings Project are live in studio with us with a very special performance and the story of how they came together.
Clearly, we have the Friday vibes going.
So let us know what you plan to get into this weekend.
Just scan the QR code.
M-Squad, you know what to do.
Let us know what you're getting into.
We're going to share your comments throughout the show.
Maybe your weekend will include Damon Wayans Jr.
I don't know. Just saying.
We're going to talk about him and to him as he takes the stage at the D.C. Comedy Loft.
He's performing there.
It's a first.
And he's no stranger, though, to entertainment.
We know that.
It is in his DNA.
And he's a star in his own right with shows like Happy Endings and New Girl.
I'm going to make a cake so moist.
Girls are going to be like, ew, why do you say moist?
I hate that word.
I'm going to like just taste the cake.
And they're going to be like, damn, it's moist.
I'll never look at a moist cake the same.
Damon Wayans Jr. has sold out shows at the D.C. Comedy Loft.
And this morning, he's previewing What You Can Expect along with the Walk Down Memory Lane.
So let's welcome Damon to the show.
Sitting way over there.
Let me get a little closer.
I don't bite, I promise.
Oh, man, how you doing?
Good, how are you?
You're in the nation's capital for the first time.
Feels good.
First impressions.
First impressions, it's very moist here.
It is very humid, yes.
Humid as heck, but I'm having a good time.
It's very green here.
I love that.
So I'm having a good, you know, we'll see.
We'll see what the world has in store for me.
And also a place that have birthed so many greats.
I mean, you know, I mean, Dave Chappelle, first of all, Tommy Davidson.
Shout out.
Tommy.
I used to tour with Tommy.
I used to open for him.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
I've been a fan of yours, your family, for as long as I can remember.
So I'm super excited.
Yes.
That's where you come from.
I've been a family.
Talk about just being in D.C., doing this show, and what you plan to get across for the first time here.
Right.
Well, so I'm gearing up to shoot a special, right, a Sam special.
It's going to be my first special, too.
And I have a lot of comedian friends that told me to come here and, you know, test my material out here
because this is kind of like one of the best comedic scenes.
And so I did my show Thursday.
It was great.
And most of the material you're going to see this weekend is going to be for my special.
So I'm really excited to see, like, what the rest of the weekend has in store for that.
So some people may see themselves on the special if they go.
No, they'll hear the jokes that they hear.
Oh, okay.
My special will be the ones that they probably hear this weekend.
All right.
Gotcha, gotcha.
So tell me, when did you first realize you were funny?
I mean, I know it's in your blood, but when did you say, okay, I want to do this, too?
Well, everybody in my family is funny.
So it's all about who just wants to take that next step in going to entertainment.
And so I would say when I started writing, I used to write jokes for my dad during my wife and kids.
And I used to, like, in between scenes, I would go, oh, it would be funny if you said this.
And it would actually work, and that's kind of what started the whole thing.
Gosh, was he elated to hear that you wanted to?
Yeah, he was like, dude, it's going to get out of my pocket?
I love it.
He's going to go make his own money?
So when you're in their projects, I mean, Scary Movie, that comes to mind most recently.
What is the pay looking like?
Is it kind of like a family hookup situation?
It's definitely a family hookup.
I'm basically, you know, working pro bono.
I'm basically working for free, and they know it, and I just have to do it, you know?
I'm standing on the shoulders of giants, so I got to pay my dues constantly.
When I think of family dynasties, when it comes to music, you know, the Jacksons are a family that I think about.
Comedy, the Wayans family.
That means a lot, obviously, to you.
But does it ever feel like, not a burden, but something that you have to uphold?
Do you feel pressure with the legacy?
I don't necessarily feel pressure.
I think my family's really good at just letting us be ourselves, but I definitely want to do a good job.
I want to make them look good, so I work really hard at my craft to make sure I'm not putting out junk.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten from your dad, your uncles, your auntie?
They give me so much advice.
I guess it's less what they say and kind of what they do.
I just follow their example.
I think my dad was a really good father and a really good provider and a really good worker,
so I just learned kind of watching him.
Tell me about these pilots that you're working on and what we can expect even more from you.
I'm actually doing a pilot, the Cable Guy pilot, with my buddy Jake Johnson, who was from New Girl,
Nick Miller from New Girl, and we also did Let's Be Cops together, so we just like to work together a lot.
We shoot that at the end of the month, and that should be a lot of fun.
It's not Cable Guy the movie.
It's just taking that property and kind of making our own version of it.
Interesting, because I immediately thought of Jim Carrey.
Not Jim Carrey.
It's like their own, what's it called, the Marvel Universe.
It's just a different version.
It's like Fargo, but they're doing the TV show.
Wow, so you have that.
What else is cooking?
Got that.
Got the special.
I have a movie that I'm developing right now with one of the writers of the show I'm called Shrinking.
I'm on Shrinking with Harrison Ford, and so one of the head writers, we're doing a movie together.
It's going to be really fun too, really funny.
Well, one thing that you have that your predecessors, your family didn't have was social media being in the mix,
especially early on.
Yeah.
How have you managed to navigate that and make it work for you?
First of all, I don't put too, too much of my actual life on social media.
I only give them exactly what I feel like they need or what I'm comfortable giving,
and I feel like a lot of people kind of get trapped in that.
You have to show them everything.
You don't have to show them everything.
You show them the good things.
You show them the things that are fun, the things that'll make them come out and see you, stuff like that.
I was just saying the other day, we were talking about people posting their highlight reels.
No one ever posts their eviction notices, divorce papers.
You never see the other side of life.
I wouldn't either, though.
I'd be like, hey, man, getting divorced.
Get at me.
I'm single.
Also sad.
Yeah.
But the scary movie, though, I read that the latest installment surpassed all previous, you know, the others.
It's like over $200 million.
Yes.
Did that come as a surprise?
The amount of money it made, definitely surprised.
But I'm not surprised that people have an appetite to go out and see comedy.
Like, people love it.
People need it now more than ever.
And so I think that this just came out at the right time.
I'm happy that my family has, like, their franchise back.
And I hope it leads to way more movies, way more, you know, Wayne's movies.
I'm sitting here looking at you, and I can certainly see your father.
But I also see Sean.
Yeah, I get that sometimes.
Do you get that?
Yeah, I do get Sean sometimes.
I do.
A lot of it.
I mean, I usually get him and my dad.
Yep.
That's what I see a combo.
Who's the funniest?
Out of all of them?
It's just the two of us here.
It's a safe space.
Yeah, yeah.
Safe space.
Nobody's watching.
I would say stand-up-wise would be my dad.
Okay.
Acting-wise, probably Marlon.
Writing-wise, Sean.
Wow.
And then Keenan's, like, all-encompassing.
He's all of them.
You thought about this one.
Yeah.
I mean, actually, I'll say acting-wise would be Sean and Kim.
Oh, yes.
Kim.
Love, love, love Kim.
Shout-out to Auntie Kim.
Auntie Kim's very funny, very talented.
All right.
So for people who are looking for something to do, can they get tickets still?
I mean, a lot of the shows are sold out, but I think there's some tickets left for, like,
the two late shows.
So there's, like, a late show Friday and a late show Saturday.
I think there's still some tickets left.
All right.
You all get on it.
Doggone it.
And if you want to go tonight at 945, tomorrow at 930, you're going to hang around just a
little bit more.
We've got some trending, some fun topics.
Thank you so much for coming.
Thank you for having me.
So scan the QR code to send messages.
Hey, you can send some to Damon, if you like, or tell us who you're getting into this weekend.
I know there's a huge concert that's kicking off tonight all weekend long at Northwest
Stadium.
Maybe you're going.
Let us know.
Coming up, speaking of that concert, the R&B tour with Usher and Chris Brown.
And there are some spicy wrists coming with attending.
Love and Marriage, DC stars Irena and Jamie Tyler, they are hanging around to weigh in
in our Hot Sheet.
Plus, they are STEM majors, Division I athletes, models, musicians, with more than 20 million
online views.
Later in the show, the Virginia Springs Project, they're going to show how talent and their
lifelong friendship created a perfect harmony.
Back now with today's Hot Sheet.
On a Friday, I have actor and comedian extraordinaire Damon Wayans Jr. here alongside Love and
Marriage, DC stars Irena and Jamie Tyler.
I have the hottest here.
That's why it's the Hot Sheet today.
Are you all so excited?
Yes, we are.
I'm so excited to be sitting next to one of the Wayans brothers.
We're all family now.
Wayans family.
You know, we do call this the Hot Sheet.
So listen, let's begin with one of the hottest concert tours this year.
One.
Doors.
Chris.
Ah, f***.
They call me U-S-H-E-R-R-A-Y-M-O-N-D.
Baby, tell me what you want to do with me.
N-S-T-H-R-I-S-E-R-O-W-N.
One.
Doors.
The highly anticipated Chris Brown and Usher tour starts tonight at Northwest Stadium.
I will be there tomorrow.
I'm super excited.
Fans are definitely saying yeah to both.
Listen, if you spend any time on social media, you probably have seen the sets.
They're very spicy.
In fact, they may need warning labels.
Just might ruin your actual relationship.
So Chris Brown has been giving out free lap dances, if you're trying to figure it out.
And a man posted this video saying Chris Brown picked my wife.
The rest is just too hot for us to show you here.
So this is the question.
Getting a lap dance from Chris Brown or eating cherries out of Usher's hands,
when you're in a whole relationship or marriage, hot or not?
The husband said...
I'm going to say not.
I'm going to say...
I'm going to say not.
I want to say hot.
I want to say this one and this.
It depends on your relationship.
You know, because some relationships allow that.
We don't allow that.
First of all, these men are greedy.
I'm going to bring you on stage and I'm going to dance on you in front of your husband.
I mean, you see the man said pick my wife.
He said he picked my wife.
He didn't say.
Allow that.
Eat cherries.
I love it.
It's like you got Chris Brown at home.
This is my Usher.
But I'm interested in seeing who he's going to pick.
If Usher feed my ladies with cherries, we both eat cherries.
I'm staying there the whole time.
Listen, I'm not mad at it.
You got to know your partner, though, to know how far to push that button.
I know my partner's not going to allow it.
I'm going to get jealous.
You got to go home after the concert, okay?
I mean, Chris Brown be grinding too hard.
He's not.
You can't replicate that later.
What if they're giving ideas?
What if it could work for the relationship?
Let's turn the table.
So you say we don't need any ideas.
No tips, no ideas.
It's been blowing up social media, this viral Netflix documentary trend,
and now one of R&B singer Ne-Yo's girlfriends is doing it while trolling her haters.
So Christina posted this with the caption,
Are you ready? Playfully staging an expose about why her relationship bothers strangers so much.
In case you don't know, Ne-Yo is currently dating three women at the same time.
A fourth girlfriend recently left the dynamic.
All right, polyamorous relationships, hot or not?
In Ne-Yo's case?
In his case, specifically.
Oh, in his case?
Yeah.
I mean, hey.
If you like it, I love it.
Yeah, if you like it, I love it.
In my case?
Turn it around.
I only have eyes for this one.
And that's it, and that's all.
No, I got eyes.
I saw what you was wearing.
I did like that.
So I got eyes.
I do like the new Netflix trend that's going on.
Actually, Jamie and I just did one the other day about Virgos.
I'm a Virgo.
And you know, we like everything perfect and clean.
You got a good work ethic, though.
Yeah, see?
Virgos, good ethic.
We're organized.
But Netflix did put something out earlier.
Like, how are we going to make all these documentaries?
Because it's like nonstop.
I think as long as people know they're in a polyamorous relationship,
whatever works for them is fine.
It would never work over in a Tyler's house.
There's a lot of people in a polyamorous relationship that don't know about it.
That part.
Which is, you know, very unfortunate.
What could the wrong restaurant ruin a first date?
A woman said on X that she canceled a date because her date picked a lame restaurant.
Her words.
She also said the food and drinks were super cheap,
and they had the audacity to have white tablecloths.
Some people said nothing wrong with preferences.
Others insisted it's not about the location.
It's more about the vibe between the two people.
So judging a date by the restaurant choice, hot or not?
I think it says something.
Yeah, I would say.
So does that mean not hot means it's not good?
Not hot is not cool.
I would say not hot.
Yeah, I'd say the same thing.
I mean, Jamie and I, our first date was at Wendy's.
Really?
Wendy's was our first.
There are people mad at a Cheesecake Factory as a first date, let alone fast food.
Right now, it was 20 years ago.
Well, I know.
They just have to know.
I let her get the super-sized.
And a Frosty?
Super-sized and a Frosty.
But it's about the conversation and attraction.
Yeah.
You know, it's not about the venue or the amount of the cost of the food or the drinks.
It's more of the attraction and the conversation.
And it could be a test.
You test her out to see if she...
She probably did him a favor.
Exactly.
What he doesn't want.
Yeah.
I mean, also, you know, ladies, if you're going to a nice restaurant, eat a little bit before you come.
Don't go hungry.
I don't want to see you go hungry.
Cookie Monster.
Eat you out of house and home.
Yeah.
Let's bring out Taylor.
I love dining plans.
You never know.
So, out the weather.
Going to be looking for us, Taylor.
It's humid.
I heard you guys talking about it earlier.
It's humid outside.
I know.
It's going to get a little bit better as we go.
Where am I supposed to stand?
I don't even know right now.
Taylor, right here.
Right here.
Come right here.
Oh, there.
I don't think you can see.
Anyway.
It's going to be humid today.
And then the weekend, it should get a little bit better.
At least by Sunday, we're a little bit drier.
So, watch out for some storms this afternoon, too.
All right.
Sounds good.
Damon, one more time.
Your comedy show.
Comedy shows.
DC, Comedy Loft, tonight, 945.
Tomorrow, 930.
Those are the shows left.
So, get your tickets.
Please.
Speaking of our viewers and getting involved, apparently, we have some comments coming in
already.
We want to take a look at one of them.
Let's see if we can pop those up.
Producer Ja'Para, I don't want to leave anybody out.
Our M-Squad, Chase says, headed to Luray Caverns and Shenandoah National Park.
So excited to get out to the mountains.
That's a good one.
Have so much fun.
Well, coming up, we want to take a look at some of our favorite shows.
We will have the Virginia Strings Project.
You don't want to miss them, as well.
Guests are three young best friends in STEM who have created viral success through the
power of music.
You just heard it there.
The Virginia Strings Project, starring Joseph Johnson, Ethan Bryant, and Joshua Harrison.
You know, on this segment, On the Rise, we like to showcase and shine a light on up-and-coming
talent right here in the DMV, and today is the Virginia Strings Project's turn.
We have Joseph Johnson, Ethan Bryant, and Joshua Harrison.
You're phenomenal.
You know that, don't you?
A little bit.
First of all, on social media, you've been going viral like crazy, but you're actually
best friends, and you have been for a very long time.
So take me back to how it all started.
Any of you can take it.
We were best friends in middle school, and we were all in the orchestra, and one day
we were all at Ethan's house, and he was playing the piano, because he also plays the piano.
Then I started playing, and they both had their instruments, so we decided to try a
song together, and we've been playing together ever since.
Oh, man, and gaining millions of followers along the way.
And you all are also super smart.
You're all in STEM, in school, or, you know, working.
Tell me about yourself, and just go down the line.
My name is Joshua.
I'm a computer science major.
I just graduated from James Madison University, and I'm going to Virginia Tech to get my
master's in computer science.
Of course, I play the viola.
I don't know how you have all these hours that evidently the rest of us didn't get,
but you get it done.
I just graduated from William & Mary.
I played Division I football there, and I studied mathematics, and now I'm working on
an AI startup for the summer, and then going to get my master's in finance.
That is just incredible.
Ethan?
I studied mechanical engineering at St. Louis University, and I went there for track and
field as a hurdler on a scholarship, and now, as I pursue engineering, I'm also working
as a signed model in New York City.
I was about to say, who's the model?
Because I feel like all of you could model, and you're proof that, I guess, God has favorites,
because you all can do it all.
And so, you're playing together, have done it for years.
Who came up with the idea to say, okay, let's go online, let's go on social media,
and make this a thing?
Definitely say this man right here, Jayden.
Front and center.
He already had the YouTube channel.
He started by himself just playing the piano, and we joined in as friends, and we were like,
why don't we all come one trio?
And so, we decided to do that, and took off from there.
I'd say, we were posting a lot on YouTube, and your friend, Pharrell, suggested that
we do short form content, and that's what really helped us out a lot.
That's like these short, almost music vignettes, if you will, that you have across.
What are some of the funniest or craziest, most bizarre DMs, comments?
Oh my gosh.
I'm sure you all get it all.
We literally just talked about this yesterday.
So, we have this one video, and it's these two in New York, and then it was like, okay,
we'll just play shirtless, just regular content.
It was hot outside.
It was hot outside, and then we just got a bunch of DMs of men going after these two.
And then women wanting us for bachelorette parties.
Lots of cool destination weddings and stuff.
But you all do events too, right?
Yeah, we do weddings.
Weddings, we pop up anywhere.
Last minute, if people need us, we'll go, same day.
Wow, you do all genres.
Yeah, that's the one thing.
We try to make sure that we play all genres, so that if a specific family or something
wants us to play jazz, or if you want us to do more soul music or something like that,
or classical, we can do all of that.
Man, you all are taking over.
I already see it.
Some Grammys maybe in your future as well.
What I love, and we're looking at some pictures here, when we first started going over, having
you guys on, that you are men of color in classical music, playing instruments.
And I remember having violinists on and pianists on, saying that we needed more of that.
Do you see yourselves as kind of role models as well in the field?
We do.
A lot of growing up and talking to our families has been, how do we get in front of the right
people, and how do we do that?
So we're taking advantage of opportunities in school and in music to get ourselves in
front of the right people for situations in which could define our future.
And hopefully the Marissa Mitchell show will help with that today.
Where can people go to learn more about you, hire you to do an event?
Yes, so you can reach out to us on Instagram, the VSP official.
Instagram, TikTok, and then our email is thevirginiastringsproject.gmo.net
Yeah, we got you covered there as well.
Thank you so much, Joseph, Ethan, Joshua.
Maybe you saw him here first.
You model, you're in the STEM, you play instruments, you can do it all.
Thank you for coming, and thank you for showing up and showing out.
Thank you for having us.
We love to see it.
Coming up, the DMV and Beyond Overnight Cookout returns for its 14th year.
Up next, the organizers preview the celebration and its mission to bring communities together.
This group of guests is taking over the 9-9 in the 2000s.
And beyond, the annual DMV Overnight Cookout is back and bigger than ever.
I have the co-founders and planners here, Mika, founder and CEO of it.
We also have Jamar, CEO of Fats Productions, and Jamie and Irena Tyler, our good friends.
Listen, you all got two segments today.
Yes.
You can always bring it.
I'm super excited to have you all.
I've been thinking about this all week long, so let's begin with it for folks who don't know.
What is the Overnight Cookout?
It's definitely an experience for everybody.
It's a lot of community involved.
Everybody comes in from all over.
It's definitely DMV and Beyond.
Where is it this year?
It's in Hughesville.
Tonight?
Tonight.
Over 400 acres.
For people who didn't sign up yet, what can they expect when you show up?
What are you going to see?
What are you going to smell?
How are you going to feel?
This year, we have added some more adult live entertainment.
Okay.
Mika has the...
We have the basketball court, the mobile basketball court.
Of course, we have the mechanical bull.
I know that gets a lot of attention every year.
That's a competition you can stay on at the longest.
Yes.
And the line steppers.
Yes, and we have the lit steppers with Lashay, Yana.
Wow.
So you could have came, bring your fans.
Bring your fans.
I've done boots on the ground so many times that viewers give me fans now.
I have probably close to 20 fans.
Jamar, what kind of got you into this whole thing?
You've been doing events for a long time.
Well, Mika actually brought me in on this one.
And it's been...
I've been going with her for the last 14 years now.
Yeah.
Just the community side of it.
Yeah.
And giving back when we can.
Other than that, just having a good time.
Spectacular.
You have a preview.
Clearly, it smells so good.
We need to smell a vision.
Go down the lines and tell people what you brought.
Okay, so we have potato salad.
We have pasta salad.
Without raisins.
Yes, yes.
Pasta salad.
We have hemisphere wings.
We have vegan big beans with ground turkey.
Wow.
Green beans, beef meatballs, honey garlic salmon bites,
yellow rice, and ribs.
Okay, don't everybody dig in at the same time.
Y'all trying to be cute.
We can eat.
How did you do the Hennessy wings?
I mean, those are kind of hard to get right.
Well, I make the sauce.
It's actually going to be on the shelf soon.
Oh.
Yes, yes, yes.
It's going to be on the shelf soon.
So did you kind of debut it at one of the overnight cookouts
and it took off?
Tell me the story of these wings.
I actually didn't because I be working.
I don't even touch the truck.
But I was at another event
and I started making it
and it just took off
and people started buying it by the jug
because I had jugs on the truck.
Wow.
And so I know there will be plenty of libations.
Yes.
As well.
And we have a lot of food trucks there.
This is just like a cookout.
We're taking our time going around
and everything's warm
and it certainly smells and looks fantastic.
I cannot wait to dig in.
Now, Irena, tell me about the experiences
that you've had there.
This is a woman.
She's everywhere you want to be.
I go to an event and she's there
but it's always top events
and the biggest events in the city.
Yes, it's always the top events
and it's the biggest event
which is this cookout.
And it's fun.
It's a lot of grown, mature adults
having a good time.
Dancing, networking,
like you said, the adult games
that they have, eating good food.
It's just a great time.
And last year, I actually stayed until it was over.
So I was there from 11 p.m.
to what, 8 a.m.?
7 a.m.
And the thing about it is
because I had such a great time,
I wasn't tired.
People say, oh, I'm going to be sleepy.
I would probably fall asleep after eating this food.
And I'm not going to lie.
It was such a good time.
I was wide awake until the very end.
So you're going to experience an amazing time.
The weather is going to be great.
So that's a plus.
Thank God.
Because if it was last weekend,
I'm a week before.
It's just going to be a fantastic time.
Friends are coming out.
You've got people traveling from
Atlanta, coming from
Texas.
And also, real quick, the people that's traveling
from out of state, you don't have to call me
and tell me that you landed.
Because I just sleep, okay?
I'm on the West.
I'm like, really?
We're friends and we're family now,
but I need my rest.
What about live entertainment?
You all have that as well?
We had the line dance.
It's always four DJs.
And we had
the body paint models coming out this year.
We should have
landed with that.
How many people do you expect?
A lot.
Wow.
Marissa, I want to add.
The DJs
this year are all
local radio
celebrity DJs.
Anybody that came last year knows
it was non-stop dancing
and a good time.
I've already received a message about the tents
that who's going to have the best tent this year.
The best RV.
It's like a real big flex
to have the best tent and RV out there.
We're giving out an award this year
for the best tent.
Let me go buy me a tent.
No one stays on long enough.
I don't even get on no more.
I don't even embarrass myself.
I just want to
walk the following day and use my arms.
What about returning
people? Do you start seeing the same
faces?
It's been the same places for years.
And they bring people with them.
It's good, clean,
fun.
You've never been, you've got to experience it once.
It's like it's getting bigger
and bigger. More people are coming
every single year. You mentioned other states.
People are learning about it.
We created a fun game
that I want to play with you all.
You all are cookout experts.
I want to call you our cookout experts.
We're going to play a game that's called cook on
or cook out.
Out meaning it's a no-go.
You don't want it. Cook on.
I'm here for this. This is a good go.
Coming empty-handed
to a cookout, but taking plates
home.
No.
There's no situation where that's okay.
Not at all.
Okay, that's an out.
Only bringing napkins, plates, and plastic
ware, but no foods.
It depends because I'm not a cook.
I don't cook.
Everybody who knows me, they know
sodas, plates, don't
bring no food.
We're okay with that?
Is it a no?
It's okay.
You don't want nobody who can't cook to bring food.
I'm known to bring the condiments
and the sodas.
I'm not getting down like Jamar.
Jamar is a cooker.
I actually didn't make none of this,
but tonight I'm going to make some.
You're going to throw that on the night.
Okay.
He's going to make his way out there.
I better see him on the grill
when I get there.
I'm putting raisins in potato salad.
I think it's a hard pass for everybody up here.
We're not here for that.
Eat it by themselves or in desserts.
Don't put them in food food.
Waiting for the blessing
or grace before eating.
Do you still need to do that?
That's a must.
What if they take too long
and you're hungry?
Everybody got one.
I've been so hungry, I said grace
Showing up and not eating at all.
They on the back.
Or they could help make something.
Sometimes when I cook, I don't be hungry.
Do you feel like by the time
the cookout comes around, you're tired
and it's like a blur?
Yeah, it's hard when you're hosting.
Sitting at the card table
knowing good and well you don't know how to play
spades or dominoes.
He doesn't know how to play spades.
Teach him.
First of all,
this brother had a cookout last week.
I put everybody out of the house.
They're still mad at me.
Did he renege?
Two of them did.
And I caught them.
So don't bring me to your spades game.
Listen to his baby steps.
I have lost friends over Uno.
That draw four.
I love you, but
Everybody play different with Uno.
Participating in line dances
even if you have two left feet.
I do it all the time.
Y'all up there messing up the flow.
I do my own thing
and I don't care because I'm having a good time.
A lot of people struggle with the Tamia one.
I get that one.
That's one of the hardest.
I'm still on electric slide.
I'm not going to lie.
We're going to try Cupid Shuffle.
Me Cupid Shuffle.
And my cousin Siobhan, she's an instructor.
I'm like, wait girl.
Here's one
and we can start.
You all blurt out if you know it already.
What do you believe is the quintessential
cookout song?
There's no cookout without this.
Leopard Slide.
Before I let go.
Yeah.
Any more?
What's the other one?
Boots on the ground?
Nah.
I can't even think
about it.
I got one. This is how we do it.
This is how we do it.
Da da da da.
What about summer, summer?
Summer time.
If you had to describe
the overnight cookout
one word to sum it up.
The vibes. What would it be?
Lit.
That's the word.
Everybody gets a word.
Family.
I would just say fun.
I would say community.
And that's what it's about at the end of the day.
And I think too, these relationships
that you all are building,
it starts with the cookout and goes beyond that.
You've seen it.
Yeah, it does.
Some of the
proceeds go to the farm
to help keep that farm
actually in business.
The things they're doing on the farm
and their produce and stuff.
It's a party with a purpose.
Will it be there every year
or are you all going to move it?
Every year.
Alright, one more time.
Where can people go and get tickets
and come out tonight?
DMVOvernightCookout.com
Oh, that's simple enough.
There's all the information.
Thanks so much.
And thank you all for coming
and bringing all this food.
Now we have to eat all this food.
Even our car crews and colleagues here.
We got a card table for spades.
We can play now.
I'm going to win spades every time.
We'll figure out the show.
Next up, we have
Your Burst of Joy.
How one local church is doing a different kind
of teen takeover.
Thanks so much for coming.
In today's Burst of Joy,
a local church flipping the script
on the idea of teen takeovers.
Instead of chaos, Revolution Revival Church
brings connection and purpose to DC.
Pastor Will Granderberry
recently shared this empowering
message online.
I'm trying to preach it to you
to let you know this is not a game.
You got potential.
It's not just a joke.
There's something in you.
Pastor Grandberry says
instead of criticizing the next generation,
this initiative uplifts them
with prayer and constructive conversations.
He says they chose the Lincoln Memorial
because it's a historic place
where revolutionary things happen.
So if you want to be a part
of the youth summer teen takeover,
the next one is Monday
at 6 p.m.
Your next Burst of Joy is special
because I love Christmas all year round.
Listen to this.
Dozens of Santas are ignoring the summer heat
in Denmark right now
for the annual World Santa Claus Congress.
It's a midsummer tradition
where professional Santas from all over the world
gather to swap stories
and spread some early holiday cheer.
This is what we mean
when we say Christmas in July.
I love to see it.
I'll be back with your M-Note.
A special thank you to all of our guests today.
The M-Note is certainly about community,
whether it's building around comedy,
around music or food,
you've got to have community
every step of the way.
Coming up Monday on the Marissa Mitchell Show,
I'm so excited to share
their crazy, sexy, cool, if you are watching.
Earlier this week, I spoke with T-Boz
and Chili of the famous group,
TLC.
The TLC musical is already playing
at Arena Stage, so I got the real
members of the group.
Monday, we're going to talk with the actresses
who are portraying them on what it took
to transform into those
huge, huge superstars.
We're also going to spread love
on one subway ride at a time.
We're bringing in the viral influencer.
You may have seen her videos.
She started a trend of blowing kisses
to unsuspecting commuters.
We're going to find out why she started it all.
Tamia Jones will be live in studio.
Plus, did somebody say Soka?
Caribbean carnival vibes
are here. DC's very own Soka Tribe.
They're going to talk dance, wellness,
community connection, and maybe teach me
a thing or two.
