Thanks for joining us tonight at nine. Our top story parents in the Peoria
Unified School District not getting the answers they wanted to hear at
tonight's governing board meeting. Public comment was canceled following
yesterday's police raid at district headquarters in connection with a
teacher sex scandal. Fox stands Andrew Christensen attended tonight's meeting.
He joins us live now. They have to be disappointed because there are a lot of
angry parents.
Yeah, there were definitely some angry parents. The district actually moved
the meeting right here to Marshall Ranch Elementary School because the
district was served a search warrant. That search warrant actually closed the
district operations for a few days. And since there was no public comment,
really, the parents didn't get to weigh in on the investigation into Angela
Berlaka and Haley Beck. Just have fun, make new memories with friends. That
was Haley Becker senior year in 2015 when Fox 10 News interviewed her at
Centennial High School. The Peoria Police Department continues
investigating her and another former teacher Angela Berlaka for allegedly
engaging in sexual relationships with the same male student at Centennial High
School. Not just the student and the teachers involved. It impacted all the
students at Centennial. Beck is also accused of sending the student
thousands of texts offering him sex and giving the student cash, drugs and
alcohol while tampering with his grades. Berlaka allegedly sent the victim
explicit videos. I don't condone at all what the teachers did. I would
never want my child in that environment. The board fired Beck and Berlaka
forfeited her teaching license. While police have recommended charges so far,
neither woman has been arrested. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is
currently reviewing both cases. The district says that it has been fully
cooperating with the investigation. They say they were surprised by
Monday's search warrant. The search warrant might be looking for any sort
of notes on campus, any sort of emails that might be in their email system,
any sort of evidence that could help prove the case for the prosecution. At
tonight's meeting, the board canceled public comment. That's never happened
before. This is a regular scheduled meeting, not just a public hearing, but
a regular scheduled meeting and that should have not been removed. However,
the board president Jeff Toby says the intent wasn't malicious. So there was
no attempt to silence or shut out the community. Um, this is specifically
the purpose of this public hearing. Parents say they are upset. Parents
just don't understand why, you know, we come to ask questions and removing the
public comment doesn't allow us the opportunity to do that.
And the district did not talk about the investigation at tonight's board
meeting. They did not have an agenda item item on it and they were not
planning to. But the district says that parents are going to be able to do a
public comment session on Thursday, July 16th. That's when they'll be able
to weigh in on the investigation or whatever they would like to weigh in on
reporting live in Glendale. Andrew Christensen, Fox 10 news.
