Painting a Seashell Lighthouse With a Limited Palette

In this video, I’m painting a whimsical, storybook inspired seashell lighthouse standing strong against a dramatic sky using only blues.

Working with a monochromatic palette really forces you to think about contrast and depth in a completely different way, especially when trying to capture moving clouds.

This is the fourth page in this sketchbook that is supposed to have a blue and water theme. If I’m being completely honest, I’m already finding it a little difficult to fill this sketchbook. Looking ahead at how many empty pages are left to go feel a bit daunting. However, that is exactly why I love these constraints. This challenge has really forced me to push past my usual comfort zone, making my brain work a little harder to come up with unique ideas that fit the theme. And a seashell lighthouse felt like the perfect blend of water, whimsy and moodiness for today.
