The summit comes amid intense regional instability, specifically the aftermath of the US war with Iran and the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
It's been a big weekend for US President Donald Trump. One day after celebrating the nation's
250th birthday, he's preparing to depart for the annual NATO summit, where he's expected to
discuss the war in Iran, as hundreds of thousands continue to mourn Iran's slain Supreme Leader.
Our CBS colleague Torian Small has more from Washington.
For a second consecutive day, mourners gathered in Iran for the multi-day funeral for deceased
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the early stages of the US war with
Iran. The funeral, which drew a crowd of hundreds of thousands in Tehran, included chants for
revenge and a call for the death of President Trump. Also threatened, Benjamin Netanyahu for
his role in the war. On Fox News this weekend, Netanyahu defended the war and said the conflict
has brought the Middle East closer to lasting peace. And I believe with the weakening of the
Iran, which has been achieved by our common action, our common military action, I think
we're going to get more because countries would like to align with us. The Iranian funeral
proceedings come a day after President Trump took center stage on the National Mall for 4th of July
celebrations, marking America's 250th birthday. He used his speech as an opportunity to reiterate
his pride in what he called a US military victory over Iran. One of the greatest naval victories in
history, much like our recent victory by sinking the entire Iranian Navy, 159 ships to the bottom
of the sea, all done in just a moment's time, happened very quickly. President Trump is set
to address Iran and international issues when he attends the NATO summit in Turkey. He said
to depart from here Monday night. Among those, the president is scheduled to speak with Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelensky about Ukraine's ongoing war with Russia.
