In a very distant past, there were ten suns that scorched the
earth, causing crops to shrivel and people to grow hungry. Hou Yi
arrived as the hero, defeating the suns and receiving a powerful
magical potion from a goddess in thanks. Pang Meng tried to steal
the potion for himself. Hou Yi’s lover Chang’E managed to thwart
his plan, but only by taking the potion herself. The potion turned
Chang’E into the Moon Goddess, who became revered by the people.
