This time, we visited Maruyama Kyuemon in Fukui Prefecture to learn about the art of Japanese lacquerware.

With a history spanning over 1,500 years, Maruyama Kyuemon carries on the tradition of Echizen lacquerware while also creating pieces designed to suit modern lifestyles.

Each lacquerware piece embodies the delicate craftsmanship of the nushi artisans, who carefully apply layer upon layer of lacquer by hand, as well as the remarkable skill of chinkin artists, who carve intricate decorative patterns into the surface.

Through every stage of the process, we were able to experience the depth of Japanese craftsmanship and the passion of the artisans dedicated to preserving these traditions.

From techniques passed down through generations to the continuing evolution of lacquerware today, this is a story of tradition, artistry, and innovation.

Visiting the workshop in person, we were deeply moved by the precision, patience, and beauty of the handcrafted work.

We hope you enjoy discovering the world of Japanese lacquerware and the master artisans behind it.
