The mirror butterflyfish (Chaetodon speculum), also known as the oval-spot butterflyfish, is a distinctive reef fish found throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific. Its body is pale white to silvery with fine vertical lines, giving it a soft textured appearance. The most striking feature is the large oval black spot on the rear side of the body, often outlined with lighter coloration, resembling a mirror or eye-like marking used to confuse predators. A bold black band runs through the eye, and the dorsal and tail fins typically show bright yellow tones. This species grows to about 18–20 cm (7–8 inches) and inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, and reef slopes. It feeds on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and algae, often seen in pairs or small groups gliding among coral formations.
