AI GeneratedThis tutorial provides a comprehensive guide to illustrating a cute polar bear in Procreate. It covers the entire workflow, from initial canvas setup and background creation to advanced fur rendering and environmental detailing, emphasizing the use of specific brushes and layering techniques to achieve a professional, stylized digital art piece.
You can draw this in Procreate. During this super easy step-by-step Procreate drawing tutorial,
I will guide you through the process of creating your own cute little polar bear.
We are working on a canvas that is 2,500 pixels by 2,500 pixels and I have left a link to the
color palette which is totally free down in the description. So if you're ready, let's get started.
First, let's pick a brush. Let's go to the brush library, then to charcoals and use the awesome
brush. And for the color, we'll just pick the first color in the first row. Now the opacity
of the brush is at 100%. I have set the size to 40 and we are going to start by creating our
background. And we'll just do that by creating like an oval shape, a little bit like an arch.
So just a rounded shape like this. Fill that in and it should be about this big. Make sure that
it's, well, that you have like the same distance on both sides. It should be something like this.
Now let's make another layer on top. Let's go to the layer menu, tap the plus, and then for our
color, let's pick this one, third color in the second row. And now we're going to create a little
hill shape of snow. So just a curved shape. Your shape doesn't have to look exactly the same as
mine, of course. So a little bit rounded, just something like this. So this will be the scene
for our little polar bear. Now let's add a little bit of a variety, a little bit of a gradient.
Let's go back to this layer, then tap it and turn on alpha lock. And then for our color, we'll go to
this one, which is slightly lighter, second color in the first row. Let's make the brush a little
bit bigger. Let's set it to 65% and let's just go over this lower area. With these rounded motions,
create a slight gradient. It's very subtle, but it's nice. And then let's do the same for our
snow layer. Let's go here, tap it, turn on alpha lock, and then we'll pick a lighter color. Start
with this one, second color in the second row. Let's just go over here and lighten that up
with rounded motions. You can leave the underside a little bit darker, just slightly. And then we'll
go even lighter with the first color in a second row. So put that at the top using light pressure
on my pen, just like this. Whenever you paint snow, try to stay away from from pure white.
Usually you can see some blues in snow and depending on the lighting, sometimes also like
these really warm colors. So that's just a general tip when painting snow. Now let's move on to
creating our little polar bear. Let's make a new layer on top. Let's tap the plus and then for our
brush, let's use the wakame brush. And for the color, I think it's handy to start with this one
second color in the second row. The opacity of this brush is at 100 percent, size is at, let's
set that to 30. And then first I'd like to create the shape of the head. Let's just make it float
around here. It's this rounded shape and it's a little bit broader at the bottom than at the top.
Make sure you color it in a little bit broader there. I've got this size and don't worry,
you can always adjust the shape a little bit later. We just need, we just need to start.
Now for the body, now let's make a layer underneath. So first we'll tap this layer,
then we'll tap the plus. And let's pick a different color just so we can clearly see
like the difference between the body and the head. We'll just use this color for now, third color
in the second row. And then let's start here and then make these lines for the body two diagonal
lines. First we'll just make a little blob here, just a base, just like a base shape for the body.
And then here we'll have a little foot. We can just make a rounded shape here and over here as
well. And he'll have these front legs sticking out here. So just imagine these little bumps here.
So we just have multiple bumps. We have these hind legs and we have these front legs,
but this is about the shape of the body. Almost looks a bit like a very simple octopus right now.
Let's also add ears and just use rounded shapes, semi-circles here. Now let's go ahead and shade
this a bit. Let's start with this layer. Let's tap it. Now actually, let's duplicate it first
so we are sure that everything is okay. Now let's slide to the left, tap duplicate and pinch these
together and untap this layer and turn on alpha lock so we won't be able to paint outside of the
shape. Then for the brush, let's go to the grunge brush brushes and use the Fortesque. And for the
color, now let's start with this one second color and the second row. Capacity of this brush is at
100%. Size add, let's go for 25. And now let's add some light to this layer. Let's imagine these legs
up like this. The hind leg and some light here on its chest. We can slowly build this up
so these front legs are a little bit lighter than the tops of these hind legs. So go like this and
let's also lighten up these ears. And then we can also go a little bit darker. Let's pick
this color, third color in the first row. Let's make the brush a little bit smaller, maybe 13%.
Let's add some of this on the feet, just in circles. Maybe a little bit over here,
in between, perhaps a little bit here on the inside of the ears. And then let's go back to
the charcoal brushes and use the wakame brush. And then we can set this to a smaller size. Let's set
it to 8%. So we can also use this to add some little detail. Let's also pick this color, maybe
this one. Let's go for this first color in the first row. You can add a little bit of like a
shadow underneath the head. Add some of this blue here, maybe here on the sides. And what you can do
is you can tap and hold the smudge tool so that it switches to the wakame brush as a smudge tool.
And then you can just go over here and you can blend these colors a bit. That way you can slowly
build everything up and you still have that nice charcoal texture. And also for the ears.
And then you can switch back to your brush. Now let's pick a lighter color, this first color in
the second row. So we can add some light touches to, for instance, the foot here and the side.
And also the front of these legs. You can get a bit more of like a clear distinction here
between the legs and the body. Put some light here on this foot. And in between you can just
use that smudge tool and blend it in a bit, slowly building up some detail there. Let's
go back to the brush and also add some light to the ears. And like I said, you can just slowly
build it up, add a bit more detail, add some of these like lines, almost adding some fur-like
texture, making these short strokes. And then let's move on to the head for now. Let's go to
this layer, tap it and turn on alpha lock. And then let's go back to that grunge brush, that
vertesque. And then let's first pick this third color in the second row. Let's make the brush
bigger. Let's go for 50% and go along the underside, adding some shadow area there. I will also use
the first color in the second row for some light at the top, creating something of a gradient here.
And I'd like to add another layer on top. Let's tap the plus and let's go to the charcoal brushes
again and use the wakame brush. And I think we can use this light color. Let's see if we can clearly
see it. Yeah, we can. Let's create a muzzle, just an oval shape right in the center of its face.
And here as well, you can tap that layer, turn on alpha lock and then you could go back to that
grunge brush to the vertesque. Now this darker blue, third color in the second row. Let's make
the brush a little bit smaller, maybe 15% and shade the underside and then add some lighter color,
second color in the second row in the center a bit. You can just have multiple passes. You can go
lighter again at the top with the first color in the second row. This way it nicely merges with
the face. It's almost like we're making like a snowman here. And now let's make a new layer on top
of this. Let's tap the plus. Now for the brush, I'd like to go to the pencils brushes and use the
broony brush and then let's pick this color, that fifth color in the second row. Now let's use that
to create a nose. The opacity of this brush is at 100% size at 15 and let's create like a rounded,
almost triangular shape and color that in. So right at the top of that muzzle and then you
can create a mouth. You can make a line downward and then a slight smile. And now we can add two
eyes, one over here, just an oval shape, one here. Try to keep an equal distance. Now in case you want to
change the distance a bit, you can always just go to the selection tool, set it to freehand,
select an eye, then go to the move and transform tool and turn off snapping here. And perhaps you
want to move it a bit closer. You can go to the selection tool again, select the other eye and I
use the move and transform tool again until you're happy with the placement of the eyes. Of course,
you could also just erase the eyes and try to draw them again, but I feel like this is an easier way
to find the right position. I hope you're having fun so far creating your polar bear. I just want
to let you know, in case you don't know already, that at Patreon I have a lot more tutorials,
like 250 plus. There's a wide variety of subjects and difficulty levels, so it's really a great
place to get your procreate drawing and painting skills to that next level and you'll just have
endless fun. So I think it's a perfect gift for yourself. So if you're interested, I will just
leave a link for you down in the description. It will be great to see you there. But now let's
continue. Now let's pick this color, first color in the third row, and let's add a little highlight
right here on the nose, little sparkles in the eyes. And let's also give our polar bear
our rosy cheeks. We can actually just put those on a separate layer. Now let's put it on top of this
one. Let's tap the plus. And then for the color, we'll pick the fourth color. And for the brush,
let's go back to the charcoals. Let's use the wakame brush. And then let's make these cute
rosy cheeks. And then actually, when you're happy with these, you could just pinch these layers
together. So just a head layer with the rosy cheeks. For the next step, I'd like to create
the suggestion of fur. First, we are going to turn off alpha lock on these layers. So first on this
one. And then for the head, let's also turn that off. And then we'll go to the smudge tool. And
we'll go to my art with flow treasure chest brush pack and use the smudgy hair brush.
Now for this brush, the opacity is at 75% and a size of 10. And now you can use this brush to go
along the outside of your polar bear. You can add this fur texture. So you just pull out
the hair here. And you can use this technique for any type of creature if you want to give it
a furry look. And of course, the longer you make your stroke, the longer the fur will look.
So just like you're pulling it out, you don't have to add too much. Just a little
underside. This will make him look nice and fluffy. And we'll do the same for the body. So
go along the ears, following the shape of the ear a bit. So curving around. And also along the
body here, I'm moving downwards a little bit. And we can also go along the legs here, adding
a little bit of texture here, here along the outside, nicely shape the hair. Now let's go
back to the brushes. Let's go to the Bruni pencil again. And for the color, let's use this.
And then let's go in and add these nails. Just use little dabs. Also on its hind legs, hind paws.
Just a little detail. Then for some extra detail on our bear, let's add some more fur texture.
But this time, let's use the Smudgy hairbrush as a brush. So we'll go to the Treasure Chest Brush
Pack. Use the Smudgy hairbrush. And let's first pick this color. First color in a second row.
Let's go to the face layer. If you're unsure about adding this hair, you can always just
tap the plus for a new layer on top. That way you can easily adjust it later on. And then we'll just
go over the face and make these short strokes. Short strokes to add this fur texture. And try to
follow the shape of the face a bit. Imagine the nose is the center point and the hairs will move
like outward from there. And this way we'll go along the entire face. And you can also go over
that rosy cheek a bit. Adding the texture there as well. So it takes a little bit of patience,
but it'll be worth it. And the shorter your strokes, the shorter the fur will look. So just going
all along the face. And as you move to the top here where everything is lighter,
you can switch to this color. First color in the third row. And use that over there.
Here we'll go upward towards the top of the head. And here we can go around the head a little bit.
So imagine it's curving like that a little bit. Here we can just go down. So you can continue
until it looks something like this. And then once you have this, you can just do the same thing for
the body. You can either work on the layer directly or make a new layer on top and then work
with these two colors to add that furry texture. And here you don't have to go all the way up to
the neck since that's a bit of a dark area. And here follow the shape of the body. Keep making
these short strokes, adding this nice fluffy texture. And then it'll end up looking something
like this. All right, now our bear has hair. So let's start working on a nice little background.
Some nice plants. I do feel like this might be a little bit high up. So what we can do is just
go to this layer, tap it and then turn off alpha lock. Now let's go to the magic wand to liquify.
You can set it to push with distortion and momentum set to none. And you can play around
a bit with the size. I want to push this down just a little bit and we can actually do the same
for the background. We can go to this layer, tap it, turn off alpha lock, go to the magic wand
to liquify. You can brush a little bit bigger. You can push this down a little bit so that it's
nicely behind that hill shape. Just a bit like sculpting. Yeah, I like this. And then let's first
go back to this layer and let's turn on alpha lock again and then add a little bit of a shadow
underneath our little polar bear. Let's go to the charcoals and let's see, maybe we can use the
osso brush. Let's pick a darker color. Let's start with this one, second color in the first row.
Let's check the size. That's pretty big. Let's go smaller, maybe 20 percent. Let's gently go
along that edge and maybe we can also use a bit of this third color in the second row.
Let's be a little bit subtle. We can also use the smudge tool. Now let's go back to
the wakame brush and then tap and hold the smudge tool so that it switches to wakame
and then we can blend it a little bit. Soft shadow. Then for some plants, let's make a layer
on top of this. Let's tap the plus. Then for the brush, we'll go to the pens and use the bronze wing
and for the color, now let's use this one, third color in the third row. Let's check the size. That's nice.
Opacity is at 100 percent, size at 50 and we'll just create some of these lines. These will be plants
which is some random lines. Some can be shorter, some a little bit longer, all the way to there
and also over here. Just a variety of these shapes and towards the side. You can go a little bit
shorter. Then we'll go to the inks and we'll use the nowhere else brush and for the color, let's
go for this one, second color in the third row. Now the opacity of this brush is at 100 percent.
Let's set the size to 50 and I will go in here and go from the outside to the inside like this,
adding these leaves here. Slightly diagonal going along the little stem. So diagonally
towards the stem, outside to inside and then left, right, left, right. All of these creating very simple
plants and just do the same thing on this side as well like this. Then to get some color variety
in here, we can tap the layer, turn on alpha lock and then pick this fourth color in the third row
and then you can go along some of these plants like this, adding that same like motion. You don't
have to go along all of them. It does give some variety. You can be a little bit more messy in
this case. Zigzag, adding a lighter touch, just something like this and then for a final touch,
I'd like to add the effect of snowflakes or stars to our background. Let's go here, tap the plus,
let's go to, let's go to recent brushes to find our broony brush and for the color, we'll pick
this first color in the third row or maybe we can actually not use a broony brush but the bronze
wing. Let's see, it's actually nice and let's just go in here and you can decide what you want them
to be. They can be snowflakes or stars but it adds a nice extra touch to your background.
A little bit messy, vary the size a bit, create some like clusters until it looks something like
this. I hope you enjoyed creating your own cute little polar bear.
Don't forget to share your result and I will see you next time for the next tutorial.
