Seven Days of Toil The Exhausting Life of a Roman Stone Quarry Worker
Jun 30, 2026
Deep in Egypt's Eastern Desert stood a mountain that built imperial Rome. This documentary follows the Roman stone quarry workers of Mons Claudianus, the men who cut the granite columns of the Pantheon under Trajan and Hadrian. Through surviving ostraca, water rations, and sick lists, we reconstruct what daily life was actually like for Roman stone quarry workers, what the labor cost their bodies, and how the stone reached Rome while the workers never did.
