The Yellowhead Butterflyfish(Chaetodon Xanthocephalus)
The yellowhead butterflyfish (Chaetodon xanthocephalus) is a striking and uncommon reef species found in the western Pacific, particularly around Indonesia and nearby island regions. It is easily recognized by its bright yellow head, which contrasts beautifully with its darker body. The body is typically gray to brown with fine lines or subtle patterning, while a dark band runs through the eye. The fins may show soft yellow highlights that blend with the vivid head coloration. This species grows to about 18–20 cm (7–8 inches) and inhabits coral-rich reefs and reef slopes. It feeds mainly on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates, often seen moving gracefully among coral formations. Its bold head coloration makes it stand out among other butterflyfish.
